Deleted message in Outlook are still there, H2 delete permanently from the computer!

Here is the situation, I have on tow differnt Mac' both running 10.8.6 and Office 2011.

I get a message and I delete it from the inbox (POP accounts with my ISP, on my own domain), and next from the deleted items folder. so far so good, message (should be) gone forever.

Now if I do a search (via the Mac find function) for the message it shows up as being in: /Users/e/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2011 Identities/Name of User/Data Records/Messages/0T/0B/0M/13K/x00_13558.olk14Message. The last item being the message.
I can open it by double clicking and there it is in its full glory. If I do a search within Outlook it shows up but has no folder located to it, so I suppose it 'finds' it in the same folder where the Mac finds it. Using the find inside Outlook I can find them, delete them again and find them again, etc. Now, not only does this bloat the storage space needed (account now bloated to 1.5 Megabite), but it is also unpleasant (security) to know that they are still there! After all why otherwise delete anything?
First question is, is this normal, and the second question is, how to set Outlook up that it removes these messages permanently?


It be interesting to hear if any of you can recreate the problem, to exclude it being a unique problem on both my machines.


What I did try so far, is:


- Create new account in Outlook (same problem)

- Rebuild database

- Upgrade to latest Outlook version, followed by again

- Creating a new account in Outlook (same problem)

- Rebuilding the database



I hope anybody has an idea as to hwo to fix this

Outlook is doing the same thing Entourage did before it. Mail you remove from the Deleted Items folder doesn't really go away. You just can't see it in the interface.


Quit Outlook. Hold down the Option key and launch it again. Rather than Outlook's normal interface, you'll get the Microsoft Database Utility. Select your identity (most people normally have only the one) in the list and click Rebuild. When it's done, you'll have a new Main Identity and the one it worked from, which now has an appended name of [Backed up 2012....].


Quit the utility and go to the Documents folder of your user account. Then /Microsoft User Data/Office 2011 Identities/ . Put the mail identity with [Backed up...] in its name in the trash. Before deleting it, launch Outlook again to make sure the rebuilt data is opened correctly. If so, empty the trash. Your deleted emails will now actually be removed from the hard drive.


If for some reason the rebuilt identity doesn't open (I've never had it happen), you can drag the new Main Identity folder to the trash and put the original back. Then remove the "backed up" part of the name so it just says Main Identity again. When Outlook is launched, it will use that one as if nothing had ever changed. All of the deleted emails you were trying to remove will be back with it, but you can at least try rebuilding it again instead of being stuck with a non working identity.

I did not know this.


Anyway, I had tried that before (as stated above) before I updated to service pack 2, and after it, but it did not help. I just tried again (just to make sure) and it does not work, the test mails I send and deleted before are still all there after the rebuild. Sorry to say.

I agree. That is partly why I am trying to find out what is going on here and if there is a fix.


Just to be sure, where did you find it? Was the old database (with the date tacked on) still on the drive when you searched? If so, that should be where you found it, not in the rebuilt database.

The old one was deleted, and if I search within Outlook it will not search in other Identities.


If I search with the Mac find function I can see they are in the Identitie I am talking about.


Try it out in yours please and let us know if you can recreate the problem.


Here is how I suggest you go about it. Write a mail to yourself. Give it a unique title. Download it.

Now do a search on the tittle in Outlook and in the finder. both documents should show up. Now delete them , next delete them from the trash in Outlook. They should be gone for ever. Do the search to check if they still are there. Next follow the suggestion of yourself, and rebuild. Search again in both outlook and finder. Are they there? Mine are. Love to hear any reports.

I was unable to replicate your issue. I created, sent and retrieved a unique email. They appeared, as expected, in the Messages. I then deleted the sent and returned message. With Outlook still running, they remained in the same folder, even though their placement in the interface had changed.


I then closed Outlook and watched as the two emails disappeared from the Messages folder (I have Outlook set to delete emails from the Deleted Items folder on exit). They were nowhere to be found on the drive after that. I hadn't even rebuilt the database yet.


The only place I could find any sort of reference to them was in the Database file of that identity. And then only if I opened it in Word with the option to Recover Text From Any File. From that, all I got was the subject line I had given the email. All body text was gone.
