Can you elaborate on "service stock"?

After much consideration and discussion on a forum I belong to, I have this thought:

I have no problems with a refurb. By in large, that term has a negative connotation. Prolly due to folks experience with refurbs from other manufacturers.

Apple refurbs, from what I understand, are top notch.

Internal components are thouroughly gone thru, prolly better than production line iPhones.

Anything you touch or see, all the external parts, are new.

"service stock" means the stock Apple provides to Apple Stores and other authorized service providers for use as replacements for warranty or out-of-warranty replacements (as contrasted with "retail stock", the new units resellers have for sale to new customers). As Tim said, these can be either new builds or refurbished units, though refurbished units are far more common. The customer has no choice in which he/she receives; it's completely at Apple's discretion.

Regards.

To add to what varjak paw said, "service stock" are packaged differently from retail stock. In all likelyhood, store staff should not be able to tell whether they are new or refurbished either. Refurbs are generally more common, though it depends on the level of supply and demand and can fluctuate with time. Recent news reports indicate that "service stock" of the white iPhone 4, for example, have run so low that they have actually begun replacing them with a white iPhone 4S for customers in some areas.
