In the 1st 'war of the worlds'
the mars beam hits the tank, it glows bright orange, then white.. there is nothign left but black ash.
the audio comments state this was the 1st use of 'rotoscope'
in the movies.

in the movie Master and Commander, there is listed a whole
rotoscope crew in the credits. rotoscope? Really? where ?

what is rotoscope?

Well... Physically, a rotoscope is a projector sort of a thingie with a glass screen and registration pins for lining up acetates, upon which images are drawn to match the projected image, or to add to the projected image. Film feeds through on a sprocketed wheel and is projected frame by frame on the screen. In film, 24 of these drawings, shot on an animation stand, then composited back onto the film in an optical bench process comprise the process known as "rotoscoping." The first star wars light sabers are a good example.

Today, the term is used loosely to encapsulate any process where frame by frame drawing is done, either electronically or the good old fashioned way.

That would be a stretch, if not an outright lie. It requires all pervious uses of rotoscopes for animated films be forgotten or discounted as "not really movies."

Surprised there aren't pictures of rotoscopes on the Web. Fascinating devices, I actually got to use one in college.
