My Time Machine says: Latest Backup: Delayed

My Time Capsule has been unable to complete a backup for 2 months. I have checked all the help items, but cannot find any reason why this error message should be delayed. I have noticed that sometimes the Time Machine makes a distinct sound (like a clock ticking) when connected, so don't know if this is anything to do with the problem. Hope someone out there might have an answer.
