    Hi,

    Lets check the steps

With iChat open go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts

In the Accounts use the + icon at the bottom of the list (Should have at least Bonjour in there)

Click and hold the top item in the new pane and it should reveal several options, one of which is Google.

    Select Google.

Add your Google Name as it appears when you go to Google Mail Web Site.

It makes a difference if you account ends @googlemail.com and you enter @gmail.com

    NOTES

You should have already been to Google and enabled Talk on your Google Account settings

You can only use a Google Mail Account (either ending) outside ot the Google web pages.  (Other Google accounts can have Talk enabled but you can't sing in from other apps.)

    Next

Now that the Google Account is set up then go to the sever settings tab

This should list the server as being talk.google.com

It will normally be an SSL Login using port 5223

You can change the port if you go to the Account info tab an untick the "Enable this Account" box to Log out.

Then items in the Server Settings fields can be edited.

    Try port 443

    Summary

Make sure it is a  Google Mail Account

Make sure the Talk option is enabled in your Google Account Settings.

Double check you are using the Google option in the iChat Preferences to add accounts.

Check the Server name afterwards and possibly change the port.

Awesome, this solved my problem. For whatever reason, in my case port 5223 was no bueno, but 443 worked immediately.

    HI,

Ports would be the next stage on from my original post.

An internet connection is divided up in to different "ports".

There are 65355 in all.  (think of them like TV channels)

Most routers only have the first 1024 ports open by default.

Apps that use ports higher then this need the ports to be enabled.

iChat and Messages uses these ports (depending on your accounts)

Port 5190 (TCP) for older versions AIM Logins.

Port 5223 or port 5222 for Jabber Logins (which depends on whther you need to use SSL)

Port 5190 on UDP for AIM file Transfers in both Messages and iChat.

Port 5678 if sending a Video or Audio Only invite

Ports 16393-16402 for newer versions for Video and Audio Chats (extend this to 16384-16403 for older versions

Port 5297 and 98 for some Bonjour Chat options.

The Apple documentation says port 5220 is also needed by Jabber logins but I have never seen it reported used by Little Snitch.

Older versions also need port 5060 for the SIP invite (later versions use port 16402).

Screen Sharing is an Audio Chat with a VNC connection alongside.

This VNC connection is on  random port

This makes it better to use UPnP as the method to open the ports in most routers.
