Why are some movies not available in the cloud after purchase?

I nearly purchased and downloaded James Cameron's Aliens, when I noticed below the purchase buttons the note that This movie will not be available from iTunes in the Cloud. Why? Isn't that point of a digital copy? I could just as easily buy a used DVD cheaper and rip it. The film is still for sale in the iTunes store, why could I not get it in the Cloud? Does this also mean I can't download it again if it's deleted?

Not all of the movie studios have granted permission for Apple to allow re-downloading. Until a studio does, Apple cannot allow that feature.

And yes, it does mean that if it's deleted you will be unable to download it again, so it would be wise to keep a backup copy of any movie that has that warning. Keeping backups of all your purchased content is a good idea in any case, since any item can be pulled from the iTunes Store by the content owner without warning, making it unavailable for re-download.

Regards.
