my girlfriend and her daughter are on the same plan. i am on my own. when both have their imessage turned on, i can text my gf and her daughter also gets my text and can reply. any text that any of the 3 of us send, we all can see in the same thread. how do we sop this from happening while leaving imessage turned on on all 3 phones? this doesnt seem to happen with any other iphone/imessage users, only me

No, the Apple ID for iTunes purchases does not need to be the same as the one used of iCloud or iMessage. They can keep the same ID for purchases (in Settings>Store) and have different IDs for other services like iMessage.
Go to https://appleid.apple.com and create a new AppleID. You need an email address (not one already in use as an AppleID) so if you need one, get a free gMail account or other free email acocunt (Yahoo, hotmail, ...).
You can have as many AppleIDs as you want or need, and you can use different ones for different services (so iMessage AppleID can be different from iTunes, which in turn can be different from iCloud, which in turn can be different from your login one for these forums,...).
You do not have to use multiple AppleIDs at all. You can use one for everything if you wish to. However, if two people use the same AppleID it can get messy - as in two people using the same AppleID to register for iMessage service. Now they both also share the exact same iMessage account so will both get all messages going through that account.
But for one person not sharing devices, or not sharing purchased content, one AppleID is sufficient for everything.
Some people may still prefer to have at least two - one for actually purchasing things in the App and iTunes stores (so it has payment info linked to it) and another for iMessage and iCloud (one with no payment information associated with it).
I have a similar situation, 2 of my friends use the same apple id, i was wondering if i created 2 contacts under the same name but put the phone number as one contact and the apple id as another contact if l sent a message through i message to the mobile number would the ipod owner receive the same message to the apple id.
Sounds like your gf and her daughter are using the same Apple ID for iMessage. One of them need to change to their own unique ID so their identities will remain separate.
they are using the same Apple ID, but if they dont, her daughter wont have any access to her itunes that are on her computer, right?

I know! This multiple accounts for multiple services - it's confusing the LIFE out of me, and I'M supposed to be a professional techie (well, that's what my paystub says). Sigh
