It all streams in the background, no need to sync. However, you should be aware that Photo Stream is just a temporary place to house photos (approx. 30 days). It's designed to give you enough time to download photos to your other connected devices. If you want these photos on your phone permanently, you need to sync these photos back to your phone from your computer by selecting to Sync Photos on the Photos tab of your iTune sync settings. Another limitation to be aware of is the Photo Stream will only keep a rolling collection of your last 1000 photos.

Actually, it not useless at all. It is designed to populate your NEW photos to the stream, which it does seamlessly and accurately. As far as retroactive population of existing photos, despite not (and correctly so) being designed to do this, there are two simple solutions that would quickly occur to any user who took a half a moment to think about it. If the existing photos are on your PHONE, do this:

1 - Go to your camera roll. Tap the EDIT button and select all the photos you want to populate into the cloud.

2 - Hit SHARE and select Photo Stream from the choices. Create a NEW photo stream. Use your OWN Apple ID for the target address.

3 - Fill out the rest of the fields (Name of stream, comments, whatever) as you see fit.

4 - Hit POST. Done and done.

If the existing photos are on in iPhoto, do this:

1 - Go to the event, album, or library in question. Select all the photos (either with shift-clicking or command-clicking) you want to populate into the cloud.

2 - Hit SHARE and select Photo Stream from the available choices. Create a NEW photo stream. Use your OWN Apple ID for the target address.

3 - Fill out the rest of the fields (Name of stream, comments, whatever) as you see fit.

4 - Hit POST. Done and done.

Like most software and infrastructure packages, Photo Stream does exactly what it is designed to do. Luckily, it is also flexible enough to allow you to go off the board and perform non-standard and esoteric tasts like this.

Not sure if you figured it out or not but here is how. The RIGHT way.

I have a macbook pro version 10.7.5

I recently ran into this exact situation but slightly different. I lost my phone NYE and got a replacement. Everything was backed up on my icloud just a week before so i had everything back on my phone with no issues. Except of course my photostream pictures. Here's what i did through trial and error.

I went through my photostream pictures on my mac and made sure i had all those pictures already added to iPhoto

***this is all done in iPhoto 9.4.3***

I deleted the pictures off my PHOTOSTREAM(be careful not to delete originals). Then i went to the "photos" section in iPhoto.

I simply selected the photos i deleted from photostream that I wanted back on my phone's photostream, selected ADD TO on the lower right then selected PHOTOSTREAM. Since it syncs automatically to all devices you should see them appear within minutes, seconds even. Just make sure your phone is connected to WiFi.

One thing you should know is that technically these weren't old photos persay. Just ones that didn't make the transfer to photostream after getting a replacement phone. So getting old photos on your photostream should be way easier. Just add them to iphoto then select them in photos-ADD TO-photostream.

hope that helps!
