can I buy more memory for my iMac (17-inch late 2006 CD)?

That model can accommodate up to 2 GBs of RAM. If you have less than that installed, then you can add more. A good source for more memory would be OWC or DataMem

I guess I only have 512 MB memory? And is it hard to install more myself or should I take it to the Apple Store? My mother-in-law just gave her iMac to my 13-year old son and we bought Snow Leopard but when we tried to install it it said we didn't have enough RAM.....

It's not difficult to install. OWC should have a video tutorial you can follow.

1 GB is the minimum required for Snow Leopard.

excuse my ignorance but then will this make the computer faster overall? We are trying to delete as much as we can that she installed, but it has Norton Antivirus on it whch is so annoying and we can't get it off!
