iMac8,1: a 32 bit or 64 bit processor?

Hi guys,

my iMac8,1 (Spring 2008) has an Intel Core 2 Duo, which according to some posts I have read online, it should have a 64 bit processor. On checking the Software, under 64-bit Kernel and Extensions it says "no". Can someone please clarify is it a 32 or 64 bit?

Or does it mean that the reason it says no is because it isn't using the 64 bit? Would I be able to use it if needed, and if yes, in what circumstances would I need to do so?

Many thanks

iMac8,1, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

iMac 8.1 2008 are 64 bit.

See here to find your exact model info.

To boot your iMac in 64 Bit mode, you need to hold down the 6 and 4 keys when starting up.

To restart in 32 bit, just restart normally without holding any keys.

If everything is working well in 32 bit, stick to it.

The only reason I see to boot in 64 bit, is because you would use a software that only runs in 64 bit.

BUT there might be other advantages 🙂.
