Q: Solid grey screen upon launch

Every time I launch FCP X the screen turns solid gray and freezes. I have emptied my templates (I was having this problem before, it solved the problem the first time around and now that my templates are empty I have no solutions) and repaired my disk permissions. Are there any steps to take before I deinstall/reinstall and will I lose my projects and events if I do?

Try trashing your Preferences with Digital Rebellion's Free (and safe) app: Preference Manager.
http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/.

If that doesn't work, drag the FCP X application to the trash and download it again from the AppStore (use the same Apple ID you used to buy it).

Try trashing the folder home/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro/Layouts.

So I have tried all of the options above- even trashing the program and reinstalling. Turns out I don't have a "layouts"folder in my final cut pro app support. Any other guesses? Thanks for your responses.

Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/

And (most important):
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664

Turns out I don't have a "layouts"folder in my final cut pro app support.

Are you looking in your system library or your home library? It shoould be in your home library if the application has been properly installed and if it has run before. Did the app ever run without the gray screen?

I've run Final Cut Pro X since it came out and besides the normal glitches here and there, its worked fine. Before that, I ran Final Cut 7 on it... It's a year and a half old Mac Book Pro, so I'm pretty sure the machine itself has the specs to run final cut on it... the folder is in Go/MacintoshHD/Library/AppSupport... how do i get to my home library if that isn't it? thank you so much for your responses... i'm kind of stunned that deinstalling didn't work.

Depends on the OS. If you hold the Option key and use the Go menu in the Finder you should see the Library.
