My G4 forces me to shut it down when I copy files.

Hello, yesterday I tried to copy some files and as the transfer was about to be completed, I got halted and a screen message appeared in 4 languages forcing me to shut down the computer. A similar message had only appeared twice in the last couple of months, but I didn't pay any attention, since the system worked fine after restart. (I have been using G4 for more than 8 years). But now every time I try to copy any kind of files from anywhere to anywhere, just as it is about to be competed, I get the same "shut down" screen. Any ideas how to resolve this, preferably without format? I have many un-backed up files, and I can't transfer them! Thank you very much for your help!

I work with Mac OS X 10.5.8.

This is what I get at the problem details window:

Hello,

Could be many things, we should start with this...

"Try Disk Utility

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

3. Click the First Aid tab.

4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

REpair the other drive also & report any errors.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for Copy problems in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

Reboot, test again.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Thank you for your swift reply! It actually works in Safe mode, so it has given me the chance to make back ups.It is a great relief, on its own. In case it is a hardware problem, it will take me some time to find out what causes the conflict-kernel panic, since the dignostics show that everything is alright! Can I work in safe mode indefinately? Any other dignostics or ideas that I can use will be greatly appreciated!

I also noticed that the kernel trap (cpu 0)states that it is a program DAR thing, contrary to the cases I have watched that are usually say DATA.Any idea, what all these lines indicate?

Yes.

See this great post by themachead on how to list the extensions in Safe Mode with System Profiler then compare to the extension folder!

BDAqua & vgonis,

I see no mention of Applejack 1.6 here, I find that as an self taught idiot that I could not survive with out it.

NOT KNOWING WHAT I AM DOING, I often create situations unheard of by smart people and experts combined.

And running Applejack 1.6 on my aged old G 4 has always restored operations and speed (it's old, slow 500 CPU, small Hdd of 28 Ghz) as it tends to slow down and really drag it's feet after a weeks worth of surfing.

So as a regular practice I will run AJ 2 or 3 times back to back, I have even run it 4, 5 & 6 times, B 2 B.

It's a life saver & a God Send, and I am not spiritual. ............

Hello

Just letting you know the rest of the story. I booted with Safe mode and while I was backing up the files I run Time machine, with the thought that if it works, I might be able to load it in normal mode and somehow fix the Kernel Panic.. It took ages for just 18GB of the start up disk, but it finished. Then as I was about to restart, a new forced shut down appeared, with different message this time(at the end of the message). I admit that I was very scared, because it happened in Safe mode! But probably it had something to do with my trying to connect an external disk for the back up. Anyway, when I turned it on again in normal mode, it worked and still works fine, without using the time machine. It might have been after all a USB circuit problem, after all. I will let you know if there are future developments.

Thanks for all your help!

BDAqua, thank you for the interest. I will have to check tomorrow, but even if it is, it is a bit strange. The problem first appeared when I tried to transfer files from an internal disc to another, no USB disc. But the keyboard and printer was attached to the USB ports. But even after removal it persisted! Now I use the extra slow 2 original USB ports-must be USB 0.5! 😉 I will have to check tomorrow. It has been more than 8 years that I have been using the G4 and I bought it used back then with everything pre-installed, in order to save me from the nightmarish PC crasses. And it has pulled through, this is the first time and it came back to life!!! (even though I have built a PC a couple of years ago, in order to work with the more needy digital photo archives.)

I have a couple of problems with the Mac but nothing really serious - to prevent me from working. The OS X 10.5.8 creates a conflict and the number pad is halting (pausing) the computer. No. 5 is un-blocking it ! So no use of Num pad. It works fine with the previous (9) system, so I know it is software problem. It also has trouble recognizing or using (writing and some times reading) external drives bigger than 750GB.(and USB memory sticks-it can not perform a format or anything) Not a problem, I have a smaller hard drive that I use (but maybe the USB ports were overused and I wear them out, and that is why I had the problem?)

It is the best computer I've ever had, and a pleasure to work with, no matter the problems or reduced computing abilities, compared with the new machines. I will get back to you as soon as I have an answer. Thank you.

My G4 forces me to shut it down when I copy files.
