Q: does this work if you purchase the USB with the Lion OS on it and install that way? I have software raid and cannot install as well.  I cannot believe Apple (well maybe) didn't think of this!

Apple does.

Copy the "Install Mac OS X Lion" application from your Applications folder to another disk that is not part of a software RAID. You can use another internal volume (if one is available) or an external drive, such as a USB flash drive. Double click the copy of "Install Mac OS X Lion" on the non-RAID volume to start the installation.

This method does not work. It simply restarts my computer after "preparing to install". There is no actual installation. True, I no longer get the error... but now I simply get nothing.... =(

Then, call Apple Support. I don't do any RAID stuff, so that's beyond my ken.

You have a MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro (desktop)?

Since the MBP only had one HDD how are you doing software RAID?
