I was trying to run this filesystem api demo: http://html5-demos.appspot.com/static/filesystem/filer.js/demos/index.html
in Safari. It says browser not supported.
Is Browser FileSystem API supported in Safari? If not will it be supported in future?

That is not part of the HTML5 specification. It is a Google Chrome thing. That funny though. Google wants you to use everything via their servers. The only local files they want you to have are the ones that they control. Nice.
I used this specification in one of my project. Only Google Chrome has the functionnality implemented. I hope Safari will implement too...
Don't hold your breath. Apple is going in the other direction, towards more secure practices.
Safari (and mobileSafari) rely on WebKit - you may want to check there for hints on future direction and see if you can lobby them accordingly.
