Q: iBook g3 no video or backlight?

My IBook g3 700 MHz dual USB has no video or backlight, have tried booting in safe mode and for some reason can not find pmu reset button. Is it the logic board or could it be the power cable to the screen?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

Only the first few models of iBook G3 (Dual USB) have a PMU reset button.

Here is a link to the PMU instructions you need:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US#faq6

Good luck. (Hope that's all it takes.)

Is it the logic board or could it be the power cable to the screen?

The short (smart-alecky) answer is "yes." It could be either.

Once you've started up, try moving the display a little more closed and, if that doesn't work, a little more open. Sometimes the cable gets caught in the hinge, and this happens. If it isn't broken entirely, sometimes adjusting the angle of the display will get the display to come to life.

If you shine a flashlight through the back of the display when the iBook is on, pointing it at the Apple logo from behind, can you see the display?

Hi, I have tried tilting the screen, and as  I brung it forward again i thought it may have flickered but it was probably me as it did not do it again.

I also tried shining light through it but all I saw was the screen go slightly green and the reversed apple logo.

In relation to the logic board or the power, is there any way of finding out by taking it to apple or is the only way to buy a new one and find out?

    Thanks

    Callum

If you can afford to upgrade to a used MacBook or new MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, I would suggest doing that. Your money would be better spent by upgrading the computer rather than repairing it.

If you are stuck with having to repair the iBook, then I would suggest contacting DT&T Computer Services in Fremont, California for an estimate.

    http://www.dttservice.com/ibook.html

They have some of the most reasonable repair costs on iBooks I've found.

Hi, thanks for that although unfortunately I live in the uk, I will look into the new laptops as I am told the intel proccesors make for better future compatibility.

    Thanks for your time,

I think DT&T will ship internationally, but the shipping costs would be so much that it would even make it more to your advantage to upgrade to a newer Mac.

You're welcome. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
