MacKeeper is malware that should be removed immediately. Don't use the built-in uninstaller, or else it will leave unwanted traces of the program and pop-ups on your Mac.

See this from forum member Thomas Reed: http://www.reedcorner.net/news.php/beware-mackeeper/

None of the above is true. I have downloaded, installed, and removed MacKeeper with no problem.

While I don't recommend any anti-virus software, I don't like to see unverified slander either.

From Thomas' site:

Since I wrote this, it has come to my attention that MacKeeper also leaves bits behind when you remove it using their provided uninstaller. Worse, those bits then display pop-ups periodically to try to convince you to reinstall MacKeeper. Someone mentioned something about that in one of the comments here some time ago, but since then I have heard it from many sources. This is simply inexcusable behavior.

From the Apple Support Communities Terms of Use:

5. Test your answer.

8.3. Do not post defamatory material.

From the phrase "it has come to my attention", Thomas obviously hasn't tested MacKeeper himself. He is just reposting misinformation that other people have posted. I have installed and removed MacKeeper and can definitely say that what Thomas has written is false.

MacKeeper doesn't appeal to me and I'm not going to recommend it. I am not going to disparage it either just because other people have. I have learned to check facts out for myself before repeating them. I don't like it when one false anti-Apple story after another gets repeated in half the blogs on the internet. If it is wrong to repost anti-Apple misinformation, it should be wrong to repost misinformation about anyone.

It is not "misinformation." It is your opinion that MacKeeper is not malware, just like it is mine that it is malware. My apologies for not stating that as my opinion. But you seem to be the only one I have heard of (besides ZeoBIT representatives) who say that it is easy to uninstall. There are people out there who have real problems uninstalling MacKeeper, and it is my opinion that the number of people with difficulties uninstalling is high.

Thomas may not agree that it is malware, but I think it is.

A number of definitions of the word appear here. Mac Keeper does not fit any but the loosest interpretations of those definitions. It is not intended by its makers to damage computers nor is it installed surreptitiously, without a user's knowledge.

IMO, calling it malware is not helpful. That detracts from the much more important issue of what is genuinely malignant software & how to protect users from it.

MacKeeper is highly invasive malware* that can de-stablize your operating system. It is also unethically marketed and a rip-off. Positive reviews of it are known to have been paid for by the developers, Zeobit.**

Further opinion on it and how to uninstall MacKeeper malware:

Do NOT download or use the ‘MacKeeper uninstaller’ from the Zeobit site, as this will cause even more damage to your operating system.

This is also worth reading:

Equally phoney is iAntivirus:

* The expression ‘malware’ is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software.

So anyone who encourages people to think for themselves is a paid shill now?

I don't know about you, but I am a computer professional. I am not a paid shill for Apple, Zeobit, or anyone else. I base my opinions on 25 years of software development experience on everything from DOS to Solaris to VxWorks to MacOS X. My only mistake has been to put too much trust into what people say here on Apple Support Communities based on how many dots they have under their avatar instead of the content of their messages. Oh well, you're never too old to learn, eh? I promise never to do that again.
