There is no 4.2.1 for Snow Leopard.
4.2 is as high as Xcode will ever go for that OS.
Get Lion and Xcode 4.3.2
Thank you, unfortunately i dont have the money to upgrade atm.
Do you have a paid (USD$99) Developer Account with Apple?
no I dont, would that allow me to download the old version of xcode?
But 4.2 doesn't let you work with ios5.1 which many (most?) devices will now have installed. So unless you haven't upgraded your iPhone to 5.1 you will have to upgrade to Lion anyway. I discovered this only after paying the developer account fee, and I still cannot use my phone for development. All this should be made a whole lot clearer on the system requirements page.
The Xcode 4.2 Read Me, same as with all versions, has all the details.
Being current means just that, so I'm not sure why only doing an iOS upgrade and stopping there without also updating to current tools, etc. makes sense, sorry.
Can you show me where this 4.2 Read Me is? The 'About Xcode' PDF in the download doesn't say it won't work with higher than 5.0. Anyway shouldn't it be known before it's downloaded?
My iPhone upgrade was done before I decided to start writing an app for it. I did some research:
On this page https://developer.apple.com/support/ios/enrollment.html#systemrequirements
it says
Do I need a Mac to develop iOS apps for the App Store?
Yes. You must have an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X Snow Leopard or later to develop iOS apps for the App Store
so in good faith I purchased a second-hand Snow Leopard machine and then paid for the developer program and downloaded xcode 4.2. I can't upgrade the machine to Lion because it is Core Duo not Core 2 duo.
The web page noted above is in severe need of updating, it doesn't say "as long as you haven't upgraded your ios device to the latest version"
If you have 4.2 installed, it will be inside /Developer.
If you have a paid dev account, it's right along with the 4.2 download link at https://developer.apple.com/downloads/
.....but you are totally misunderstanding (or ignoring?) my point, which is that the publicly-available information, from a beginner's perspective, was incorrect. Did you not read past my first paragraph?
It's pretty bad having to pay for, and then download, something to have to find out that it does not meet requirements. If I had known beforehand I would not have wasted my time & money buying a used machine, and I wouldn't have had to pay for the developer account until I was sure I needed it, i.e. after I've got started and actually created a basic app - which I still cannot do, because I was provided with wrong and incomplete information on Apple's website.
