For the past couple of days my Messages Beta app isn't opening on my MacBook.  The little white light comes on under it to indicate that the app is running, but no chat box appears.  And even if the chat box does appear, none of my chats show up and it doesn't allow me to start one.  Is anyone else having this problem?

    HI,

In the Message Menu > Preferences > Accounts are the accounts you have enabled ?

I have the same problem, but I can't click Preferences; it's grayed out.

I don't know...it is the Beta version, so it must have some bugs. I click on it and the circle comes up, but the window isn't there. Then I enter another app and click on Messages again, and there's a new message open, with none of my old conversations there. But I restarted my computer, and it's working now! I'm not sure what the problem is...

    Hi,

It is hard to tell sometimes what has got in Messages way.

It could be an old Add-on for iChat (Such as Chax) or for the System that iChat could access such as iGlasses.

    Try this.

In the Finder use the Go Menu and hold down the ALT Key to see the Library option.

Select this and then open Preferences.

In the Preferences find the com.apple.imagent.plist item and drag it to the Trash.

    Restart Messages.

    HI,

Go to the same Library and delete com.apple.ichat.plist (Yes Messages still uses the iChat.plists)

This one should return the Preferences to the Dark text so you can access it.

    HI,

You are using just Ethernet or Wifi and not both at the same time ?

If you use both your computer gets two IP s from the router and FaceTime and iChat cannot resolve this.

Same issue here as Clearbear and DarkJediKnight - was working fine, then fast-switched to another user to try it out there, and now everything's locked up.  I can open the app, but preferences are grayed out and unselectable, and I get the "fault sound" when I try to open my buddy list.  Any solutions besides a restart found yet?

    Hi,

In the Mac User account your switched to did you use the same Messages details ?

Is this a Managed Mac User account with Parental Controls turned On ?

I am having the same problems.  I cannot even access my users preferences to try what you're suggesting.

SOLUTION! Looks like a bug.  First, I quit Messages.  Then, I used Activity Monitor (usually found in the Utilities folder), selected the process 'imagent,' and 'Quit Process.'  Messages was working again as advertised.
