Motorola H700 automatically disconnects.

I am having a lot of trouble with my Motorola H700 headset. I can pair easily, and the headset even shows up in my System Preferences, but I get the "Bluetooth Audio Failed" or "Disconnected" errors when I try to use them as Input or Output.

I noticed in Bluetooth Preferences that in the Devices tab, the "Connected:" spot goes back and forth between Yes and No, it seems for no particular reason as the headset sits 6 inches from the machine. Eventually, it just stays disconnected.

Any help is much appreciated.

OK - I've been having problems with a Motorola HS820 and I think I've got a workaround...

As had been mentioned, if you power the HS up before the Mac then everything works ok - otherwise it's problematic at best with continual disconnects etc. (at least for me) - What I've found that seems to be doing things for me is to switch bluetooth off - then the HS on - then bluetooth back on - and it all works fine..

YMMV etc. but looks ok for me atm. and does save having to restart your Mac just to use the HS.

Sorry folks - I was a bit over-eager in posting that. The workaround isn't necessary, a previous poster had the answer. Simply wait until the HS has finished 'reconnecting' to the Mac after switching it on (i.e. the bluetooth status logo goes from it's dotted-'B' to a plain 'B' again) before launching Skype etc.

I've been playing about with it and thus far - with me waiting the required time - it's worked 100%.

I am having the same Bluetooth Audio issues with a Motorola H700. As with everyone else, the device pairs correctly and shows up in all the menus. My test is to set my main sound output to go to the headset and then hit play in iTunes.

What I've noticed is that the headset will remain disconnected until something makes a sound. At that point the headset will become connected (I watch it in the bluetooth pane of System Preferences), hang for a bit (iTunes' song progress indicator does not move), and then disconnect, throwing the Bluetooth Audio Failed message. I tried the suggestion that Davey Moore posted above (on my 12'' G4 Powerbook, my G5 wont' let me turn off Bluetooth since my keyboard and mouse are both Bluetooth), but it did not work.

I watched the system log in Console.app during the whole connect/disconnect process, and the messages I get are pretty consistent every time I try this. I don't want to clog things up by pasting them all here, but here are some of the highlights....

There are a bunch of startup looking messages like performPowerStateChange and openRFCOMMChannel that all look like they are not errors. But next:
IOW late 50052784
IOBluetoothSCOAudioOutputEngine[performAudioEngineStart] 1 mBluetoothDevice->sendSCOData returns 00000000
IOBluetoothSCOAudioOutputEngine[performAudioEngineStart] 2 mBluetoothDevice->sendSCOData returns 00000000
[IOBluetoothSCOAudioDevice][incomingRFCOMMData] 9 bytes AT+VGS=7^M

This is the point when the system hangs. After a long pause...
[AppleUSBHCIController][HandleIsochData] Got error - e00002eb
[AppleUSBHCIController][HandleIsochData] Got error - e00002eb
USBF: 102379.981 IOUSBPipe[0x6436800]:ClosePipe for address 2, ep 3 had a retain count > 1. Leaking a pipe
[scoDataSendComplete] - fails new send current retainCount 15 .
[scoDataSendComplete] - fails new send current retainCount 14 .

After that it's all standard looking clean up messages. Hopefully this can be of some use to someone who knows more about what those messages might mean.

It would also be interesting to know if this problem has to do with the headset model or not. I saw above in the replies that someone is having problems with model HS810. That's the headset I used to have before it broke and I got the H700, and it always worked fine with my G5. Unfortunately I have no idea what patch that was on, but I was definitely running some version of 10.4 at the time.

WHO KNOWS.....
I paired my H700 with my Mac. Success. The of course i had the same problem all of you are discussing.
This seems to be what is working for me.
After powering up the computer and you see the bluetooth ICON is in the status bar. Flip open your boom on the H700 or HS850.
Three dots will appear across the bluetooth icon. The headset is now active. You must wait until the 3 dots disappear. Now the headset is in standby mode.
You go into your preferences and change Audio input and output to HS700. The icon becomes active again. Wait until the icon goes into standby mode again. Close preferences. You will hear a sound in your headset that the headset is now active. Look at the icon again and if it is active wait until the dots disappear again before opening any sound application. When you open any sound application the DOTS will appear and when the program ends the dots disappear and the icon goes into standby mode.

YOU HAVE TO WAIT between Active and Standby modes. Otherwise, the AUDIO failed Alert will appear or the application may also FREEZE.

Doing this i have been able to use my RAZR, play any quicktime movie or any sound application and also my SKYPE (make sure you change AUDIO preferences in SKYPE).

I just have to be patient between Active and Standy modes with the BLuetooth ICON.

I AM NOT the smartest when it comes to computers and this may make no sense to any of you. But it does seem to work for me.

ANY shortcut suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't believe this is an issue with the Apple drivers or software, rather with the power-saving / standby features of this headset. Unless it makes an immediate, active connection, the headset automatically falls back into standby mode. Which is why you have to let it fully go into standby mode, then 'reawaken' the headset by activating it within an application.

BTW, it works fine w/ a phone because there's never any idle time where it is connected to a phone. If its connected, you're using it. When you disconnect, it goes into standby.

Upside: better battery life. Downside: inconvenient to use w/ a computer.

BTW, I had the same problem with the headset using it with Windows XP, so it is definitely an issue with how the headset goes in/out of standby mode and NOT an Apple issue.

I think this has to be a software issue. Today I paired my H700 (which has never once worked on my Mac) with my PC, and it immediately worked with a VOIP phone application without any trouble.

Also, before I got my H700 I used to have a Motorola HS810 working correctly (same Mac), but other people in this thread are having problems with the HS810, the same model that used to work for me.

Looking at it that way, the same model headset worked at one point in time but not at a later point in time. Given the consistency of hardware between Apple products, the only two things I can think of that would explain this are
1. One of Apple's Software Updates introduced this issue.
2. Motorola changed something about the HS810 (hardware/firmware) and mine was so old it didn't have that.

I'm trying to get in touch with Motorola to see if I can rule out number 2.

My HS810 worked with my Dual 2.0GHz G5 using the DLink DBT-120 External USB Bluetooth dongle. Does anyone else having problems with the HS810 have the same configuration?

Motorola's Response in a nutshell: Your headset supports the Bluetooth Headset Profile (HSP) and can connect with devices that also support this profile, including computers. What determines your ability to use the headset is the profiles that the computer supports.

They said they don't offer support for Bluetooth connectivity with Macs, but what they said makes sense. Bluetooth uses a set of standard protocols, and technically any two devices supporting a common set of protocols should be able to communicate.

So the problem has to be related to either the bluetooth device, its firmware, or OS X's Applications.

My Computer says (Apple Menu -> About This Mac -> More Info -> Bluetooth Section)
Apple Bluetooth Software Version 1.7.5f10
Bluetooth Firmware Version 2.1586

What version is everyone else at? If the people that can get their headsets to work are running a different version of the software or firmware, maybe we can pinpoint the version where things went wrong.
