How to write a letter

We just got our Mac, and i wanted to write a letter today (the snail mail kind). There doesn't seem to be any software to do this, unless it goes by another name i don't know of yet. I found the iWork suite online with Word, Excel, etc. for $399. I just can't believe that we spent $2000 for a computer and i can't even write a letter. I am crazy!?

G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Which G5 do you have . . . is it one of the new Intel Duo Core,
or the regular G5?

Take a look at your applications folder.
Is there an "AppleWorks" application in there?

If not, here are two suggestions that are free for the download.
Both come recommended by experienced helpers here.

You also have a program called "TextEdit" that can be used as a simple word processor. If you are qualified, Microsoft Office for Students and Teachers is $149 and includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage. iWork from Apple is $79 and includes a Word processor and presentation program.

I have the duo core. I don't see AppleWorks in the Applications. I'll try those two links I guess. Thanks for the help.

I've used TextEdit before, but i need to be able to do more, like in the real Word program. What do you get for $79? I only saw the more expensive version at the Mac store.

If you go to your applications folder and look for the Office 2004 Test drive, you can use it for 30 days before you have to buy it.

I agree with you that it's crazy that you don't get a word document application after you've spent $2000 for your Mac and they make you pay for it! Craziness.

Another option is to get an open source from: http://www.opensourcemac.org/ and a software AbiWord which lets you create word documents.

You're mistaken, look again carefully. iWork 06 with Pages and Keynote is $79. AppleWorks is $79. MS Office Standard is $399.

In addition to the free programs AbiWord and NeoOffice/J, popular non-free word processors are Mellel and Nisus Writer Express. These have free trial downloads.
