Upgraded Late 2006 XServe CPU to Xeon 5160 3.0GHz now Fans stay on Full Speed.

I Upgrade the CPU's on my XServe (Late 2006) to Xeon 5160 3.0 GHz/4M/1333 SL9RT CPU and the Fans stay on at Full Spped and the Red Light at the back stays on. The CPu's were well seated and used Artic Silver and coated them well. Temps are fine. Any suggestions would be great. Do I need to recalibrate the Server like you have to do on the G5's when you change the processor? Its a Server though it would be like a PC server where you can upgrade components as needed. Any help and direct appreciated.

I have tried similar, but I did not get this problem. As far as I am aware, there is no requirement for calibration, but I can understand why it could be a logical solution to the problem.

Could you run a fan test and report the results to me. I could be able to give you more guidance on what to do.

The fan contorller should not be ruled out, even though it is highly unlikely to be faulty.

Hey Max, Thanks for the suggestion. I order some more Artic Silver 5 so I could swap out the processors and see what the problem was. Swapped the processors and nothing. Still the red light and no video. I swapped out the Mezzanine Card because I thought that might have been and issue and still nothing. Swapped the Drive for a Leopard Server Xserve drive, nothing still. Swapped Ram out nothing. I made a genius bar appointment to see what they got for to diagnose it. Thinking maybe I fried the motherboard somehow.

Hi, no problem at all.

Well you have done all of the obvious checks and swapouts.

I think a genius bar is your only option really. They should be able to run the diagnostic probing software for you and give you a price for the part. Don't buy the part there and then as you could find a better deal on eBay and then go back to them to fit it if necessary or fit it yourself.

Good luck, either way. It would be nice if you could let me know what fixes it or what you have blown! 🙂
