I cannot connect to safari or my email now that I have cancelled my carrier & backed up my plan on my 3GS. Any ideas?

I cannot connect to safari or my email now that I have cancelled my carrier & backed up my plan on my 3GS. Any ideas? I was told I could use it as an iPod touch now when connected to wifi & everything works but Internet & access to email. I took it back to old carrier & they tried a few things & had no idea why I was having these issues.
