When I put my comp. (Power Mac G4) in "sleep" mode, get up in AM and it's crashed, need to restart every time. Ran Disk Utl., and is okay. Instead of shut-down, restarting in AM, is there anything that can be done?

Hi Judy, what all PCI cards, USB, & Firewire devices do you have plugged in?

At this point I think you should get Applejack...

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...

applejack AUTO

Then let it do all 6 of it's things.

At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.

The 6 things it does are...

Correct any Disk problems.

Repair Permissions.

Clear out Cache Files.

Repair/check several plist files.

Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

Trash old Log files.

First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)

Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

640 x 480

640 x 480 (stretched)

800 x 600

800 x 600 (stretched)

1024 x 768

1024 x 768 (stretched)

1280 x 1024

The last one is what I have it on and although there's no "stretched," it definitely is! Please, oh please, can you help?

And I'm kinda afraid of Applejack, but do you really think it would solve this, or should I just shut down in PM and restart in AM?

Apr 20, 2012 10:53 PM in response to Judy Eberhard

I don't think AJ will solve this particular problem.

Have you restarted the Monitor or tried replugging the Monitor cable?

At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac.

Then click on More Info>Hardware>Graphics/Displays and report like this...

Just an FYI: I'm out-of-town until Sun., but will be very anxious to look for your e-mail when home.

You are fabulous and I'm sure you've gotten a lot of compliments on your tech savvy! I personally thank you for your knowledge on this older Mac - NOT Intel based and helping me, walking through everything, on my problems with this comp.!!.

Ques. 1 - you then recommend shut-down and start-up so comp. won't crash?

Ques. 2 - this is what my comp. reads under Graphics/Display: Where can I change it? I tried under this screen and, of course, it won't let me!

You are fabulous and I'm sure you've gotten a lot of compliments on your tech savvy!

Bemuses me sometimes, since I barely graduated from 6th grade, & was kicked out of 7th grade for reading Dictionaries & Encyclopedias instead of the required reading, but thanks. 😊

#1: Hmmm, might require some work, but AJ may help that problem, don't be afraid, we can workthrough it together, & once you do it, like learning to walk... it's so easy you can't figure out how it was ever a proble. 😉

#2, That old Graphic card doesn't have short screen wide screen support naturally, since it didn't exist then, we might have to resort to something scarier than AJ...

DisplayConfigX...

Did it ever work on this Mac at this rez? I'm confused about the Windows reference earlier???

Apr 22, 2012 7:23 PM in response to BDAqua

Your background is amazing! Did you ever go on to get a degree or finish high school?

Did it ever work on this Mac at this rez? YES - FOR YEARS, until I had to replace it.

I'm confused about the Windows reference earlier??? The CD that came with this monitor is for all Windows settings - totally stretched and it distorts all of my programs!

So, I guess I have a number of issues going on here, huh? HELP... me if you can!! Thanks. JUDY

Apr 26, 2012 10:22 PM in response to BDAqua

OMG! Sorry I didn't answer or reply sooner as I know you are ready and able to help me with the issues.

This conversation deals with the ACER MONITOR, H233H series.

You asked: Did it ever work on this Mac at this rez?

I replied: YES - FOR YEARS, until I had to replace it.

Which now brings me (us) to finding that rez. I had to replace the monitor because the on/off button broke. I found the same one at an OfficeMax store, and set it up and, poof, my rez. was gone.

You asked: I'm confused about the Windows reference earlier???

I replied: The CD that came with this monitor is for all Windows settings - totally stretched and it distorts all of my programs!

And yes, the setting of 1920 x 1080 rez. worked GREAT on my monitor and pute.

You see, most of the programs, free downloads, software and hardware, are all IBM based, but you know that.

Again, is there a way I can get that rez. back? I hate this stretched out and distorted look. It's awful to look at and work on projects with this "stretched, squatty" look.

P.S. Now that you know my first name, can I get yours?

P.P.S. You can't convince me on your education. I'll bet you have a Ph.D. or something!

Apr 26, 2012 11:50 PM in response to Judy Eberhard

You can't convince me on your education.

No, really, I did graduate from the 6th grade, but I can't prove it! 😟

Ph.D. naw, when I was in school College would've cost like $1,000 dollars a year, besides about only the top 10% could be expected to get to a College/University, & funniest sexist thing, Boys were not allowed to take Typing, only allowed to stay after school & move those 80 pound monsters after all the Girls left! Still one fingered typist here.

Now, back to your problem. 🙂

Might try trashing these files & reboot...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost /com.apple.preference.displays.<12digitHex#>.plist

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost /com.apple.preference.displays.<12digitHex#>.plist

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist

Might try a version of SwitchResX for whichever OS you decide to use...

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15467

Or if Tiger or greater...

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10910363

Now that you know my first name, can I get yours?

My friends call me BD, some call me B, & a few oters call me D, but ya doesn't have to call me JJ! 😉

Apr 27, 2012 1:00 PM in response to BDAqua

1. I don't get it - why not JJ? - (that's what my son goes by.)

2. I don't get it - why am I trashing those items? - (does this pertain to the monitor or the "sleep" mode thingy?)

3. I don't get it - the sites you said I should try for SwitchResX doesn't list OS 10.4.11 (no Intel). Do you know

if 10.4 is considered the "Tiger?" I keep forgetting what my system is named.

Apr 27, 2012 1:22 PM in response to Judy Eberhard

1. You don't want get me & your son confused! 😉

2. Pertains to the Monitor, hopefully new ones would be created.

3. Ah, didn't check that, yes 10.4.0 to 10.4.11 is Tiger.

4. Still not clear, did this monitor ever work on this Mac, with this graphic card that is installed now?

I forgot about any Sleep thingy, trying to fix one thing at a time... I used to be able to Smoke & chew Gum at the same time, but found life a lot easier once I gave up Gum. 😀

Apr 27, 2012 4:13 PM in response to BDAqua

1. Trust me, I wouldn't get u 2 confused - he's 6'7", 295#, size 17 shoe.

2. Should I still do this?

3. I'm on 10.4.11 - NO Intel.

4. This same monitor, ACER H233H, has worked on those rez settings before, but because I had to replace the monitor (because of the on/off button broke), it seems like all of the new monitors (same exact style) are set-up for Windows (p.u.).

And I gave up the gum thingy also over smoking!

So, B, here's the deal-e-o, totally forget the 1st problem listed (u no, the 1 that started r "relationship" LOL) and let's stick to the monitor rez, okay? Okay! So do u still think u can help me with that 😟 or not?

Forever grateful, JUDY
