Q: how do i know if i use java applets?
The latest software updates states that if you don't use Java applets, then you should disable the java web plug-in. I have no idea if i use Java applets(!!)
any help would be appreciated. thank you.

Keep java off and wait for something to break. Odds are nothing will. There can be applications written in Java which obviously wouldn't work if Java is off and (a) it would be obvious the app wouldn't work and (b) you would probably know it's an app written in java by its name or description or it ends with .jar instead of .app.
What you disable in the web browsers are their ability to use Java (don't disable Javascript, that is unrelated). Rarely do you need it for a browser and any site that might want it would give you an error message about it. Outside the browser Java apps would fail if you disable Java globally with the Java Preferences (in Utilities).
