How to completely block Facebook

When I surf the Internet I always have a Facebook.net cache cookie in Safari. I already have installed Glimmerblocker, Facebookblocker, AdBlock, Ghostery, and Facebook Disconnect plugins all with strict filters but nothing helps. The option to block third-party cookies is enabled, of course. I don't see Like buttons on webpages anymore but the cookie comes again and again. How can I ban that terrible Facebook from my computer? It's like a plague.

Like many others, I have drunk the Koolaid, and am hooked. Thus, the problems with Safari creates a sort of cognitive dissonance for me. I have struggled with Safari's inability to do what it says under preferences and I am disheartened by Apple's nonresponse to the problem. This sort of incompetence we came to expect from nearly all other software and hardware companies, and we suffered with it until the arrival of Apple.

The larger question is. Why hasn't Apple fixed this problem? Perhaps this is not incompetence, but rather by design. This conclusion is more than a little disheartening for me as a user, and just as importantly, as an investor. It's hard to imagine a situation like this persisting under the guidance of Mr. Jobs, and maybe this is the first chink in the armor. Perhaps it has been the wow factor that attracted so many of us to these excellent products, but it is the reliability factor that keeps us in the fold.

I have successfully solved the problem by switching to the Firefox web browser. It appears to be completely capable of doing what it says - blocking all cookies, but it goes much farther in permitting a user to select exactly which cookies to block or allow. This is a sophisticated system that with its ease of use, suggests Firefox has borrowed a page from Apple's success.

I know of no biggerr threat to Apple's ongoing success than its failure to fix problems such as this one, for after the wow factor has faded and been stolen and copied by every other Tom, Dick and Harry manufacturer out there, it is the dependability and reliability that keeps us in the fold.

This is indeed a disappointment.

I know this article. It recommends, like dozents of other pages "Adblock" or "Facebook Disconnect". As I wrote in my first posting, I already installed these plugins besides others but with no success. I spent hours of looking for a good solution but nobody has a real clue. The cookie is always saved.

Is it possible to redirect facebook.com and facebook.net in /etc/host? I'm afraid I destroy something when I change this file.

With the help of a system administrator I wrote the following addresses into the host file.

1. Write this into the Terminal: sudo nano /etc/hosts

2. Write these addresses line by line into the Terminal:

127.0.0.1 ads.ak.facebook.com

127.0.0.1 creative.ak.facebook.com

127.0.0.1 creative.ak.fbcdn.net

127.0.0.1 ns3.facebook.com

127.0.0.1 ns4.facebook.com

127.0.0.1 ns5.facebook.com

127.0.0.1 connect.facebook.net

3. Save your work and close the Terminal.

It may be a good idea to write 127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com into the host file, too. From now on Facebook connection are routed to your own computer. If a cookie is set by websites (mostly the facebook.net cache cookie) it will only send information to your localhost but not to Facebook.

In addition, you should use Glimmerblocker and OpenDNS to completely block Facebook from your system.
