I tried saving an audio file to my external drive but it won't let me saying "the volume is read only. Try saving to another volume." I don't understand.

Logic Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hmmm... as will all files on that drive.


Assuming that you have a drive format that is OK, it could well be worth checking the permissions on the external drive (Select the Drive in the Finder and press Command I or use File:Get Info).


Your user account should have "Read-Write" permissions, or to get around the permissions issue completely, check the "Ignore Ownership on this Volume" checkbox.

What is the Format? Is it Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or something else?


Some formats are read-only in Mac OS X. In other words, you can get files from them, but not write files to them.


If you go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, you can erase the drive, and format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).


Then your problem should go away.
