Atrocious ad blocker

I use Safari V5.1.7. "Block cookies" is set to block cookies "From third partyies and advertisers". Safari does an atrocious job blocking blocking advertising cookies. Even after I clear all the cookies, after visits to just a few websites I can count 2 or 3 dozen tracking and advertising cookies. Is there some sort of blocking plug-in that actually works? Clearly AdBlock is beyond useless. I am assuming Apple, Inc is getting well paid by advertisers, Google, and the like, to fool users and allow tracking and advertising SW to be installed.

Like all users I need to be able to have specific visited sites set cookies. With private browsing my normal log in to my bank site doesn't work and I have to answer security questions and plug in a secret code sent via text. All of which is a hassle.

I haven't used FireFox for a while. I'll check it out and see if tracking SW blocking is any better. It used to be pretty good.

I used that link to test cookie blocking. With the settings set to "Block cookies: From third parties and advertisers", primary cookies should be set. And indeed this tester shows that.

My complaint is the tracking and ad cookies I see, even with the above setting. For example, doubleclick has set a cookie. Do you think the ad and tracking cookies are coming from the primary site, e.g. Google is allowing doubleclick to set a cookie, as an example?

The tracking cookies come from dodges such as web bugs, javascripts, and iframes that work around the browser's algorithm for rejecting them. This happens with all browsers, not just Safari. In addition to Ghostery, I use ClickToPlugin, a Flash-blocking extension, and GlimmerBlocker, a configurable web proxy that blocks almost all ads. I also quit Safari on a regular basis to clear all cookies, tracking or not, except the few that I want to keep, using an application called CocoaCookies.
