Opening from an external hard drive
I have a large library that I have been organizing. If I want to keep half of it on an external drive can I still open it in iPhoto from the external HD? How do I do that?
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

You can not have part of an iPhoto library in one place and part in another. The iPhoto library is a SQL database and must be treated as a single entity
You can have multiple iPhoto libraries and use iPhoto Library Manager to move photos between them. You ANSI can export from one and import into the other but IPLM is an easier tool for managing multiple libraries.

So if I create a new library and put it on my EHD, will it keep all the photo metadata intact when I transfer my images?
Yes if you use iplm move the photo
Otherwise only the exported metadata will be imported
