I'm afraid the flashing ? means that no drive can be found, your hard drive is toast.

What could have possibly happened to turn it into toast? My problem is even worse - Disk Utility doesn't even recognize my hard drive, yet when hold down the D key and the hardware test is performed, it says no problems are found. Is it a software issue?

I'm very disappointed - I've been a Mac user since the '80s. My last machine (a G5) lasted 10 years before it went belly up. I've only had this one for 6. I thought I could get at least 2 more years out of it.
