Would Apple fan boys on this post (vazandrew I'm looking at you) please stop blaming the user. More and more people are being affceted by this issue.
I for one am suffering through very slow download speeds. I can stream 1080p Apple content across my network from my home server both wired and wireless, with no issues. The problem occurs when i try to either rent content or stream previously purchased content from the Apple store. My Internet connection is fast (10+ Mbps).
This is an issue that Apple needs to investigate. No sense in burying their heads in the sand hoping it goes away. They are losing money because people will not be able to rent content or wait the hours it takes to download it.
very good point in regards to losing money. I was previously downloading movies via Direct TV. I stopped when I bought my ATV because I like Apple better and it is a $1 cheaper. I have since stopped becuase the loading/buffering issue is not worth it. I would rather pay $5.99 and be able to play the movie instantanisouly.
It has nothing to do with being a fan boy, it's about stating the facts. It's a small amount of users having the issue, and being able to isolate issues on the network to rectify the issue in most situations would not be the case if it was on their end.
This is my experience too. Apple TV 3 is getting slower. I was embarassed the other night when I invited friends over to watch a movie and it wouldn't play. On two occassions my wife and I have gone to Blockbuster to rent BlueRay because the Apple TV 3 is slowing down. Im still reading this thread for answers.
I'm too am becoming suspcious that alot of these problems are not entirely our collective fault as implied by the help team at Apple. My ATV (generation 3) is connected via ethernet with consistant download speeds of 45 mbps. My ISP claims they do not throttle yet I experience the same interupted streaming of rented and purchased content mentioned here and elsewhere that did not exist a few weeks ago. For what it's worth, I have a second ATV (generation 2) connected via WiFi with consistant download speeds at the module of 25 mbps. Entirely separate system yet it experiences the identical problems as the ethernet ATV 3 at the identical times. The implication is that there is much more to these issues than just a bunch of technically challanged users who can't manage to get their gear to work and if Apple truly cares about it's customer base, a little forthrightness might go a lot farther than what seems to be just a corperate shrug.
Took mine in to an Apple Store. Movies downloaded quickly there. Since my ATV 2 downloaded movies nearly instantly and the download speed ground to a crawl the instant I purchased ATV 3 I can only conclude that the new antenna in ATV 3 is far more prone to interference. My wifi speed is never lower than 16 Mbps.
I posted back on page one commenting on the problems I was having with my ATV 3. I went to namebench to find a new DNS number finding the one I was using to be substantially slower that the one recommended. I changed DNS number and it worked for awhile. Nevertheless, here I am, again, experiencing the same MIND NUMBING slowness of ATV 3. If I stream a show on Netflix through my Roku box is goes uninterrupted. With ATV 3 it's unwatchable. Constant stops and starts to rebuffer. Try to watch a show I purchased on ATV 3 and it's no better. I never had the degree of difficulty with ATV 1 as I have with ATV 3. Given the choice between ATV 3 and Roku I always opt for Roku. It's a cheaper, more stable alternative to ATV 3 and no amount of fan boy posturing will convince me otherwise.
Not a happy customer.
I'd like to add that watching MLB on ATV3 is a test of patience as well. An inning doesn't go by where there isn't buffering every few minutes. Thankfully, I've been buying my subscription by the month. I'm cancelling in August. Apple, there's something wrong with your little black box.
ATV3 is a FAIL!!!! I bought the MadMen series and you can wait for hours for one episode to load. I had the earlier ATV's and they were not this bad. Take back the $500MM in options until this is fixed. Clearly an Apple server issue. Take a few billion$$$ and buy NetFlix already! You have the money.
Don't launch a service without the support and charge for it. I have had movies expire before I could watch them!
I have Vudo, NetFlix, Tivo and Roku and they all download right away.
I wouldnt say its a small amount of users. I also have the same issue in Melb Australia. It seems to be related to a software update. It was working fine but now I cannot watch a rented movie. It goes from ready to watch to "loading". Apple needs to fix it. Love my ATV but it has to be resolved by Apple.
Well, I too am now struggling with this issue. I had thought that it was simply affecting my ATV3 but now I am having the same problem with my ATV2 that I have at a different location (on a separate wifi). Both networks are running > 16 Mbps and yet it is becoming nearly impossible to stream purchased tv shows on either of the apple TVs. This was not a problem a few months ago and has gotten worse over the last few weeks. Too coincidental for me to think that this would be related to network issues at two locations on 2 separate generations of ATV.
I have the same problem. DNS settings are ISP's defaults. I own two units, ATV2 and 3. In precisley the same set up and location, the ATV2 will steam HD video, whereas the 3rd gen unit will barely load the movie posters. It sounds like a faulty unit to me.
I had an issue with purchasing an HD movie, but realised the issue was that upon purchase, it was downloading not only to my Apple TV to begin watching immediately, but also to my Imac, my Macbook Pro, 2 macbook airs, 2 ipads, and ipod touch, and my iphone, which were all on the same network.
After I changed the options on all but my Imac to not download all purchased content. I have not had any issues whatsoever, even though at my home, there are usually 3 apple tv's streaming from either Netflix, Hulu+, Itunes, or my library simultaneously. BTW, I have Comcast Broadband, and my speedtests run on my imac have never reflected less than 24 Mbps, and usually are higher.
Same for me as well! Had a ATV2 but upgraded to the 3 because of the HD. Glad I looked here cause I was really frustrated! Still am! I have Cox Cable and my download speeds are at 23 mps (wireless). MY ATV3 is connected directly to the modem via ethernet. I have only tried downloading a Netflix movie in HD but cancelled my subscription because of this issue. Excessive buffering etc. Now I will tell you viewing the same movie on my iPad from Netflix loaded in seconds on my same network. (yes I know it was not in 1080p) I am thankful I came here cause I was about to go out and spend a bunch of scratch on a new router and modem. Please guys (Apple) take a look at this and help all of us out. It seems we are all ready to commit if you'll just figure out what's going on!
I've been having the same issue, I tried to rent the original Total Recall tonight (because i saw the latest one,and it was super bad) The Rental said 52 minutes before it would play, so i waited. After 52 minutes, i tried starting it and only got 10 minutes in, and the audio was off from the picture. So i tried buying it thru iTunes on my desktop, and the HD version says 6 hours to download (it's been 3, and now it says 7 hours to go) the SD said 3 hours to download (It's been 3 hours, and it says 4 hours to go)
I just finished watching the SD version using my PS3, and it took under 5 minutes to download the whole movie. So the problem is not my Internet. It is Apple. Looks like i will be throwing my 2 APV's in the garbage.
