PPC G5 Quad 2.5GHz Thermal Calibration

Hi

I have two G5 Quads - One is a 2005 build year and the other is a 2006 build year CK618- - - - - - - - -)

Both machines run lovely

I have a DVD that a Apple Technican gave me from a servicecentre

It is a Apple Therimal Calabration workshop disc 2.6.3 especially for the PPC Quad 2.5GHz

I have a problem when calibrating the one machine. (serial number CK547- - - - - - - - -)

It comes up with this a warning:

User uploaded fileUser uploaded file

I have taaken the Plastic Air Door on and off now during end of test when it says above - The Red & Yellow & Green lights come on (above the Ram at side of Ram slots) - so it knows the plastic door is off - the Large INTAKE Aiir Fans slow down in front of Radiator.

When the Plastic air door is put back on - the fan speed up again. (in test mode see pic above)

I have also put in other Large INTAKE Aiir Fans ( I have purchased 5 of these which I have in the store room - in case a unit went down)

This has no effect - I still get the message.

All the other tests - using this Apple Workshop Disc 2.6.3 - ALL PASS with flying colours

PS - The machines ARE MINT INSIDE - and when I say you could eat your dinner I mean it - theres NO DUST (they are just like they ahve come out of the box - They are always on sleep - I start them up once a week for about 7 hours. They Sleep well - when asked (No Panic Kernals)

They are just fine - except the above problem.

PS - The above machine used to pass this test.

Theres NO collent leaks (Both machines have the Last Panasonic Cooling System MK3) see pic

Has anyone got a fix.

Thanks

Hi BDAqua

I have put in x2 Brand New out of a packet 2x2GB RAM sticks -

Taken all the other 16GB Ram out of all slots - so ONLY BRAND NEW RAM

Just ran ASD 2.6.3 disc in machine (Warmed up G5 for 10 mins) - Ran the Thermo Test 3 times and it again failed.

Theres NO need to put a hair dryer to the Ram Modual - as the RAM on ASD 2.6.3 PASSED

and besides - If I heat up the RAM - It makes the computer HOT inside and Therno Calibration will be way off.

The G5 Quad - is sat in a warm room on a table and has been running for about 2 hrs.

Has anyone any idea - why I am getting this messgae ????????

Given the nature of that error and the corrective action, I would check the opaque area (lower right?) of the air deflector where it contacts the air deflector sensor.

If the opaque area is scratched or if the sensor is compromised, the error will persist.

I have taken off another Clear Plastic Air Deflector from Quad No3 & Quad No2 - and tried both of these.

I have also used a Giotto Filtered Air Bomb which is for Nikon D3 camera I use - to blow (if any dust) from that sensor area you mention above.

NOTE: When I take the PlasticAir cover off (While is ADS2.6.3 service mode) the three lights near the RAM light up solid (RED, GREEN,YELLOW) - this is fine - as I know the plastic air cover has been removed and the Intake Fans slow. When the Cover goes back on - all lights go out - Intake fans back up to Service Mode.

So - the point above "Check Plastic Cover Sensor" - Its working correctly.

I am just pleased I have so many PPC G5 Quad - so I have loads of parts (all machines were purchased New)

I just need to find out why I am getting this message on Screen.

Hi

It just show this screen (see Picture above)

I have had the PPC G5 running for 1 hours prior to the ASD2.6.3 Thermo Test andevery time I still get this screen.

I have removed the Plastic Air door - and immediatly replaced the door (the door is seated 100% - The Clear White Label on bottom of door is 100% intaked - Silver on reverse. Theres nothing wrong with the door - I have even got the other G5 Quad doors and tried them too.

In a nut shell - Run the programme - I keep getting this message. It does not complete.

You say the machines run lovely, which begs the question why would you want to run thermal calibration in the first place? Thermal calibration needs to be run when you replace the CPUs or the logic board. If you have the commonly heard "fans are too loud" problem, it's the cooling system at fault and calibrating is unlikely to help. Fwiw, the cooligy LCS that you have is so well sealed that it'd be a small wonder if it visibly leaked.

If the front fans spin and change speeds in the OS according to CPU load, the error sounds like something wrong with the SMU unit. Maybe a reset will help, or a longer (1) take out the fans, (2) reset smu, (3) briefly power up without the fans, (4) power down, (5) put back fans, (6) reset smu, (7) power up. Replacing the CR2032 battery might also be in order.

Hi Heikki

I want to Run & Complete this Thermal Calibration.

The PPC G5 Quad - is now 7 years old.

Every Year I run Lepard OSX10.5 disc - Reinstall (to double check everything) then update to 10.5.8

These G5 Quads - are like my best friend - the need a bit of TLC and hense I want to ensure Thermal Calibration is completed.

All fans fun as they should (temps are also as they should) - full work load under Final cut HD - is about 78c - the processors (using activity monitor) are balanced.

The Problem is WHY - does it come up with this warning - and not complete.

I have also replaced ALL CR2032 battiers (Every Year) - Mac is always in sleep mode too.

I will try the above with resetting the SMU unit

Hi BDAqua

Hope you OK

Just to touch base - I have still been trying to do the thermal calibration.

Things as they are:

1) The Plastic air door (when in ASD programme the fans are running full - when you take off this plastic air door - they fans SLOW down - all the lights come on near to the RAM (red/yellow/green) As soon as the Plastic Air door is replaced the lights go out and fans run back up. SO THE AIR DOOR SENSOR AT THE BOTTOM RIGHT HAND EDGE BELOW MAIN UNIT - RECONGNISES IT BACK IN

2) There is no dust anywhere - the machine is 95 immaculate (all air senors are free from dust)

3) When using the machine

A) Fans tick over in standby mode

B) Fans all fuction as they should

I just want to get to the bottom of this - Why does it not complete the programme (it did about 3 months ago)

I have replaced every Fan - including the MAIN INTAKE FANS for new ones - still same result

Would appricate your help

Cheers
