I'm not understanding Winston Churchill is saying users can't create an iCloud account with an @me.com address, when in fact, every user with an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch/Lion is given three free accounts that can use an @me.com address.
Unless he's trying to say something different, on every brand new device (ie, iPhone, iPad), if the user selects iCloud in the Settings menu ... the user can Create a New Apple ID and select to use an existing email address OR create a new name using an @me.com address.
This has happened with all of our accounts. I've checked appleid.apple.com and verified that it in fact is an @me.com address at the end of my Apple ID.

If you created a new Apple ID the same way I did, then that new Apple ID becomes a new main iCloud account. You won't be able to link it to another account since it's already a primary account.
Are you saying that when you log into Find My iPhone with your username@me.com in the username/email field, that the emails are still being received at a different email address that isn't your username@me.com email? If that's the case, have you checked appleid.apple.com to see what the listed primary email is for your username@me.com (log in with that Apple ID).
