The best way is to go through Apple. They will replace your iPad with a new or refurbished iPad that in all aspects will be like new. The replacement will not be covered by warranty if it was caused by an accident or misuse but the cost will be only about half of a new iPad. And you'll have a like new iPad.
You can get the glass replaced at 3rd party repair sources for less $, however, the Apple warranty will be voided.

Cheers, Tom 😉
April 25, 2012. Apple in Burbank, CA, just replaced our ipad which had a cracked screen with a NEW ipad - for FREE!! We went into the store, told them our son dropped it and they gave us a new one. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Apple. That why my family owns 3 desktops 2 laptops an ipad and 3 ipods. Best customer service on the planet!
So for around $400-$500 you get a refurbed iPad, with no warranty?
Why would someone do that when they can pay much less ($230, still researching), with the same effect of losing the warranty, which expires after the first 90 days of ownership anyways?
For reals? Seriously? No charge?
Yes, absolutely free. They didn't ask for a penny! They were so nice and helpful and replaced the whole thing with a brand new one! Apple rocks (and no, I'm not an Apple employee, just a Mom with kids who break things)
PS the ipad was about 5 months old at the time Apple replaced it with a new one. The age of the product is probably important.
AND another time, about 3-years ago, my Apple laptop cord burnt through (the casing was scortched and it made a burn mark on the carpet - when I took the laptop in they went to repair it but the drive crashed at that exact time - I suspect some type of power surge that fried the drive and the cord, or something like that)
BUT my point is that APPLE gave me a BRAND NEW titanium laptop to replace the old one - AGAIN FREE.
A great company, we'll be customers for as long as they turn out good products and tak care of their customer like this!
Thanks Kristina... my five year old son dropped ours on the ground and the glass cracked. Just bought less than two months ago so I'm praying I get the treatment you got. We'll see I guess.
Good luck! That's the same thing that happened to us. Let me know how it goes - I think yopu have a good chance.
Thanks for your posts. My six year old dropped mine, which is property of the school I work for!! I'm going to take it into the closest store and see what I can get done about it!
So, just curious, what happened? Did Apple replace the ipad? Hopefully free?
No luck at all. Incredibly disappointing for me as I've bought a lot of apple product over the years. I'm talking thousands, double digit thousands. The "genius" told me they never do what you have described, so I seriously doubt your story at this time. Why don't you give us the store name and location?
You had apple care plus?
OK - well doubt all you like. I was just posting here because I wanted to let people know that Apple did something really nice for my family, and they've done it before. As I said in my previous post, on April 25, 2012, Apple in Burbank, CA at the genius bar replaced our cracked screen on the ipad for free. I did not have Apple Care. I told them my son dropped it the guy went back & forth to the manager and the manager OK'd it.
Also, now that I'm thinking about being called a liar, around September 2011, the home button on my iphone failed to respond when pushed, I took it into the Apple store in Ontario CA at the Ontario Hill Mall ONLY see if they could fix it, the guy at the genius bar just replaced it with a new iphone of the same model, I didn't even ask for a new one, I was surprised and delighted. - it was about 12 months old at the time.
So - I don't know where you live but out here in So. Cal. The Apple stores go out of their way to help people and they have helped me a lot. I posted this only to let people know that, as it appears, sometime Apple CAN and DOES replace products if they can - and have done that for me, repeatedly. maybe this policy will change now that Steve's dead, but so far they have.
I guess if you ask them nicely they may help you too, but if you go around calling people liars, when you have no evidence to support that- it may turn people off... just saying...
Why don't you try a different store - and put on your happy face.
Since the release of AppleCare Plus, Apple has pretty much ended the policy of replacing hardware that has clearly been damaged through negligence and not a manufacturers defect. If you have AppleCare Plus you can replace your iPad for $49. If you do not have it go back to the Apple Store, talk to the manager, and see if they will let you purchase AppleCare Plus for $99 and then pay the $49 deductible to replace your iPad.
