Hi I have an old imac G4 800mhz and I want to get a software update. currently running mac osx 10.4.1. mail and other programmes dont work or are not there anymore. what can I upgrade to as I'm not srue it can handle the new OS

You should at least update Tiger to 10.4.11.

If you can find a copy of the black retail disk on eBay or Amazon.
But no further upgrades are possible on a PPC Mac.

If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:

After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

Got a copy from ebay, all wwent well with the upgrade and software update. Had to manually dl quicktime update for itunes to work.
