How do I get Apple TV 3rd gen to output audio through a receiver?

I have a third gen apple tv and a Denon AVR-1612 Receiver. I have the HDMI from the Apple TV hooked into the TV. This gives me video and sound through the TV. To get sound through my receiver I connected the Optical Audio from the Apple TV to the receiver but nothing is working. Any help would be great.

Apple TV, iOS 5.1

I was having the same problem..

I connected my apple tv to my yamaha receiver with an optical cable so that I could stream music with out having to turn my television on but it would not working at first. The only way I could get it to work was to turn the tv on AND have airplay mirroring on.

Finally, following the advice of Winston Churchill above, I changed my audio out and dolby digital settings (see below) and now I can stream my itunes music to my receiver without having to turn on the television...apple tv does need to be turned on however.

Go to settings --> audio & video

dolby digital --> ON

audio output --> 16 bit

Hope this helps.
