For what it's worth, when I wanted to use my work Exchange Account on my iPad, I had to agree to use a long passcode (rather than than a 4 digit one) and I had to agree to allow the company the ability to remotely wipe the iPad.
It was all more trouble than it was worth and I ended up deleting the Exchange account from the iPad.

AGAIN...I know all of this. I figured out how to fix the problem, but this is still an actual problem. I just feel it is VERY POOR programing to have the e-mail function lock out the rest of the functions. I, like many people, share my iPad with my family and they don't know my e-mail password.
The Cancel button in the pop-up should do what is says, and allow you to bypass the entry of the password and still use the iPad. I have had my iPad for a few years now and gone through several password changes. Until the most recent system "upgrade" any change in my password just meant that my e-mail stopped coming and going until I changed the settings...even with push notifications enabled. There was no pop-up that locked me (my husband) out on a recurrent loop.
This happened to me when I had to change my work e-mail password (we have to change it every 6 months). The password is your microsoft e-mail password. To have it synched with you e-mail you should have put that password in the settings/mail/accounts area in the past. I have no idea why the iPad completely locks you out of use until you figure this out. Took me two days, and I blamed my kids for messing with my iPad and this being related to a game account. APPLE MUST FIX THIS!!!
Mr. Sampson,
I don't think you understand the problem, so I will explain more clearly using way to much of my actual work time.
I have no problem with my employer or microsoft requiring a poaasword or with my employer requiring me to change that e-mail password. The problem occurs when the e-mail feature controls the entire iPad, and locks you out from all other functions unless you know the new password. In the past, when I had to change the password, the only effect was that my e-mail would not download and I could not send from the iPad, but I could use the other apps.
Here is a scenario...least you think this is an imaginary problem. Say, for example, I have to change my password at work so I do, but my husband is using my iPad to score a baseball game for our son on GameChanger. He gets the pop-up which says incorrect password for Exchange account. He presses the "Cacncel" button, which should just allow him to use the iPad, but not update the e-mail password. It does not. It just keeps popping up over and over and OVER and he cannot use the iPad at all.
Although I did eventually figure out what the problem was after searching the internet for fixes. Two things need to happen.
1. The pop-up needs to be clearer...ie not targeted to computer programers or tech people who think it should be clear to everyone what an exchange account is. (Please refer to your respose which uses terms like "a version of an IMAP account...that's not helpful). For example, the pop-up could say: "Did you change you outlook (or Gmail or whatever) password. Please enter the correct password.
2. The Cancel button in this pop-up should actually work...to clarify: you should have the option of ignoring the prompt to update your e-mail password, but still be allowed to use other features on you iPad. Right now, if you select "Cancel" the same pop-up just keeps coming. That sounds like a pretty bad glitch to me.
I am not sure if you work for Apple, but hopefully this clarification of the problem will prompt Apple to DO SOMETHING TO FIX THIS APPLE problem.
Hi, moomoodoctor, if you have push notifications enabled in Settings for your email account, this means that your iPad will be continuously checking for new emails and therefore trying to connect to your email account. When it cannot connect because the password has been changed, the iPad prompts you for the new password.
Because the push option is enabled the iPad "thinks" it is your preferrence to find the emails downloaded as they get received into your account and readily available for you to read when you open the mail app. If you do not want to be prompted when the iPad cannot establish connection with your email server, simply toggle Push to Fetch in your email settings. Then the iPad will only look for new mail when you open your mail app and thus will not prompt you for your password until it tries to make the connection.
The other and perhaps easier solution is that every time you change your email password because of your employer's security policies, you change it in the iPad email settings and thus you can keep the Push notifications ON because the iPad will be able to make the connection.
So you see Apple does not need to change anything because you already have the possibility to adjust Settings to your preference.
Yep, and if you do have your work Exchange Account on your iPad (and I can see why you would) then you have to abide by their security policies.
In any event you should probably not have your work email account on an iPad that is used by people other than yourself, talking about breach of confidentiality, and that is why employers set up all the security policies.
If you want to call that poor programing that is OK, you are entitled to your opinion. I call it brilliant programing and I am also entitled to mine,
I have searching for how to solve this (exchange password problem) for 2-3 days and I believe you have provided
the answer. I simply turned OFF the 'push' option and so far I'm not getting any password requests. I can live
with this.
Thank you. humbug.
I agree. I have had my iPad air since December. All of a sudden this week I am being asked for an exchange account password. I do not have an exchange account through work. I have no idea why this has started. It does seem to have interfered with me getting and sending email. I can't provide a password since I don't have one to begin with. All I can think is that I signed up to outlook.com a month ago, but I did this for a community group and did not use my personal email. What to do?
Your replying to a 2 year old post and may not get much response.
Outlook is an exchange server,
So that is the ow being requested
Go to settings
Mail,contacts,calendars
And you can either delete the account or set the proper settings to keep it from requesting.
Thank you I will do that. It is annoying that this cropped up at all since I did nothing whatsoever to get this exchange thing going - I don't have an exchange account nor any connection to one whatsoever. Sorry - in my car in the dark without my reading glasses looking at a tiny iPhone 4 screen and my old eyes did not see the date. It just was exactly that my iPad Air and iPhone 4 was having the exact problem so it fit my concerns. You'd think two years on this should not be an issue anymore but it is.
I think this part of the the program must have been written by omeone from microsoft !!!
It is a type of email account - Microsoft's version of an IMAP account which also provides syncing contacts and calendar events over the air.
Is the email account provided by your employer?
It is indeed a Microsoft email account. Do you have an Exchange email account (usually from your workplace) that you syned to your iPad?
There is nothing for Apple to fix.
This is determined and required by your employer with their Exchange account.
I understand your problem quite well.
Blah, blah, blah. tldr
