Q: Why can't I airprint using my ipad through a printer connected to my airport express? This seems like a major oversight.

If airprint was developed to only work with wirelessly connected printers then why wouldn't it work just the same with a printer connected to an airport express? It seems only natural that these two apple products would work seamlessly.

A:

AirPrint was designed as a printer driver. Those printers that support AirPrint can be used by the iPad to print. Those printers not supporting airprint cannot be used by the ipad. This avoids having numerous printer drivers on the pad taking up space.

Thanks Ralph. That's a good point I haven't thought of. It's too bad that the ability to add drivers isn't there. It's almost like they took a step forward in somethings but took a step back in others at the same time.

I have a Lantronix Airprint server. I upgraded to IOS 7.0.4 recently. Now, the iPad occasionally forgets the Lantronix and cannot find any Airprint printers. This happened to me using Pages, but when I opened the Pictures app, it found the printers, and after that, Pages could see them too. I would say this is a bug in the Pages version, or IOS 7.0, or both.
