how to set up used ipod shuffle for new user

I received a used ipod shuffle (version 4, I think) from my daughter but cannot sync it in ITunes (get an error message "iPod cannot be synced. You do not have the privilege to make changes"). Is there some way i can reformat this ipod so that i can download items from ITunes on my computer?
