Reposition Playlist Title?

I usually print using "text...black & white". At any rate, the title always ends up at the extreme bottom right, almost out of the paper's edge. EG after cropping (cutting with scissors) the printed p'list so it will fit in a jewel case, the song list is on one side and the title is on the other. But, the title is at the bottom right, almost off the page.

Is there a way to resposition or move the title, so it perhaps is printed in the middle or top left?

The "Print" options on iTunes are very simplistic, and do not allow editing. You can pick from a few options, but there is no way to customize.

Pretty incredible isn't it ...considering how 'old' iTunes is and how 'venerable' Apple is in the 'creativity' department? Therefore, along those lines, I thought it had to be me; me being ignorant. But alas....

Thx for verifying what I thought. Just hard to imagine millions of users printing jewel case playlists not complaining. I'm pretty sure that's the case after spending about 10-15 mins searching Discussions and 'yahoo searching'.

Be happy you can even burn CDs. With Apple getting rid of iDVD and trimming down new Mac models by omitting optical drives altogether, it won't matter in a few years if you can't burn the jewel case covers to perfection. The trend seems to be directed to who needs optical media when you are loading all your iTunes Store purchased music on your Apple brand multiple i-devices, preferably frrom your Mac computer?

David,

To the best of my recollection, the iTunes options for jewel case printing are exactly as they were 5 or 6 years ago. I think the decrease in complaints over the years results from people everywhere gradually losing interest in burning CDs.

There are of course 3rd party programs out there that allow much more flexibility and creativity in designing jewel case inserts.

Chris and Ed:

Am I that old school? I burn CDs for use in my vehicles and my boom box. I also give some away to friends. Almost every new vehicle comes with a CD player. Most musical artists sell CDs. So, I'm not quite sure about your replies. I'm thinking CDs are still fairly ubiquitous.

Ed, I'd mark your reply helpful if you mentioned a couple of those 3rd party programs. Chris, you too if you'd clue me in to the alternatives.

David,

I once did an informal analysis of traffic on mix-CD enthusiast websites, and concluded that interest in custom-burned CDs peaked in 2003, and has had year-over-year declines ever since. You can read the writeup on Zen Running Order.

Of course there are still zillions of people enjoying it, just not as many as there used to be.

Ed,

The first comment at that web site, "...I'm a guy that makes cds still. Thanks for making this mix.Well Done!!..."

LOL

I'm not so much into "fiddlin and artwork"...I just want the p'list title to not be at the very bottom edge and almost off the printed page.

I appreciate those templates. Now, how to get the p'list and title over to NeoOffice?

David,

Here is the way I do it (these are the Windows steps): Open the iTunes playlist, and go into View > View Options and hide the columns you don't want for your cover. Then CTRL-A, CTRL-C to copy to clipboard. Now in Power Point, create a Text Box, and CTRL-V. Edit/adjust as you wish.

I have also been known to create artwork in PowerPoint on that template, print it out, and then scotch tape the iTunes B&W printout to the back of it.

This all assumes that you feel comfortable with PowerPoint. if not, you can investigate purpose-built CD cover design programs like this one: http://www.easycoverdesign.com/

David,

The templates do work fine in PowerPoint on a Mac. Not sure what is the incompatibility with NeoOffice.

A web search will turn up several CD cover design programs that work on a Mac, although if it seems like overkill just to reposition a title, I sure can't disagree.

As mentioned, if you want to use iTunes for the jewel case inserts, you are stuck with a few fixed, non-editable designs, but that may be the least of the evils.

Ed...appreciate ur continued interest and replies. I've seen several 3rd party apps for printing labels etc that will supposedly also print jewel case inserts...but...yep, overkill just to reposition the titles.

What happens with NeoOffice...I select all....copy...then paste to the template. But the printed product font comes out about 5 times bigger than what was copied; and doesn't even resemble a jewel case insert. I haven't taken the time to try to fix that, if there even is a fix.

Back to my point, kinda: Apple has a very good music app that allows one to do many things like playlists, smart playlists, 'genius', ping, import, export, album art, sync, etc....and burn CDs. Yet, it's a sorry excuse for print options.

I have found a way to change font sizing in the itunes print options. You have to be comfortable editing the iTunes XML files. I tested this on iTunes 11.0.1 on OS 10.8.2.

Start by quitting iTunes. Then, right click iTunes.app and 'Show contents'. The folder is 'iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/PrintingTemplates' (I assume this is valid for the other languages, but I'm not sure). You'll see the xml files inside corresponding to the print options given.

Open the one you want with a text editor (I was interested in 10.Insert.SingleCover.xml). I strongly recommend making a copy of the file elsewhere, or you can restore from Time Machine if something goes wrong I suppose.

Inside there will be a line

<element type="playlist">
(line 65 in my file)

Below this there will be a line with something like

<textSize>12</textSize>
(line 71 in my file)

Changing that number will change the font size for the playlist text (track #, song name, playtime). You may also need to change the next line down, <smallestSize> to avoid any problems but I'm not sure.

For the Playlist/artist combination (the top), look for the string <textFormat index="0">%COMBOPLAYLISTANDARTIST</textFormat>. Two lines above it there is another textSize and that controls the title font size.

You have to save the file and reload iTunes for it to take effect. You will (probably) need to authenticate as an administrator for the file to save.

Good luck!
