Download speeds on WiFi Diminished by 90%?

I've had the new iPad for about a month, and about 10 days ago I started noticing very slow download speeds. I was used to getting about 19up/19down (speedtest.net app), but now I'm only getting about 1.9up but still about 19 down. I'm not too sure what the problem is. I've tried rebooting the router and the iPad. I've reset my network settings. I can confirm that on my desktop I'm still getting about 15up/13down.

Any assistance would be appreciated. I'm very knowledgable about computers and networks, but cannot figure out why only my download speeds have so greatly diminished.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

There are a number of threads about iPad WiFi, including this one with over 1500 posts...

Without taking an hour or three to read the entire thread, some people report slow-downs when QoS and/or WMM (Quality of Service, Wireless MultiMedia extensions) is enabled on their wireless router. Try disabling it/them and see if your speeds change.

Also realize that Speedtest.net is a brief snapshot at one point in time. There are a number of reasons why your upload/download speeds might vary, including environment, interference from other wireless devices and wireless networks, if you have a Smart Cover attached, and how you are holding the iPad.

And normally the download speed (to your device through the WiFi router from the internet) is far more critical than the upload speed (from your devices to the WiFi router to internet). For example, my DSL carrier advertises 3.0Mbps downstream and 512Kbps (0.5Mbps) upstream.

The post you pointed to is in regards to intermittent connection issues. I never experience a loss of connection, only a 90% reduction in the speed. On a side note, the search functions on this site are archaic at best, so attempting to locate a similar post is not going to happen.

I have not made any changes to my router settings, and as mentioned, I was attaining excellent speeds for the first three weeks. The speed tests I performed were in the exact same location with the exact same speed test application. I had one day in the past 10, when I checked, and the speeds were performing well, but before and after, the speeds are close to dial-up! I notice this lag when I play online games, and it forces me to close the application to try to figure out why my download speeds are so slow. Additionally, I have no smart cover. I have made no changes to anything, yet my desktop, which is about 5 feet away has no issues whatsoever with its WiFi download speeds.

The download speed IS more critical, and hence the reason for my posts.

Thanks again for your assistance, but unfortunately my issue has not been resolved.

Usually it's because you are not making internet connection via wifi.

Additional things to try.

Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

Here's the specific post about QoS to which I referred with screenshot reproduced below to spare you from an archaic search: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2780293?answerId=17679260022#17679260022

displayed on page 95 of the thread at 30 posts per page

User uploaded file

This poster reported about a drastic ~2,000 times increase (0.8Mbit increased to 15-20Mbit) change in download performance when QoS was disabled. No change in measured upload performance.

Or your iPad is just 'broken' and needs to be replaced under warranty.

My router is the Actiontec MI424-WR. For some reason I do not have the ability to disable QoS/WMM. The manual shows it is possible, but my updated firmware does not seem to have that feature as it is listed.

I was, however, able to increase my download speeds and basically resolve the issue by changing from mixed b/g to only g, and then restarting the iPad. Although now my upload speeds are significantly less, but I can deal with that. I had read this the first time I searched for an answer, but didn't think it was possible with my router either. This feature was just a little harder to find, nestled inside the Advanced Security Settings screen of the router GUI.

Thank you kostby and Texas Mac Man for providing help and assistance! I'll keep you posted if for some reason this is just another fluke and my speeds drop back down to a snail's pace.
