Me too - wonder if a server has gone down.

Solved - Disconnect from pc if connected by cable. Open itunes on pad - scroll down and click on Account. tap on sign out.

Click on Account again and this time sign in. reconnect cable and device appears again.

I tried this and it did not work... Got all the way to the loading bar and the "pairing" issue pops up and the ipad shuts off. HELP!!

I unplugged my USB and plugged it back into a different port and it worked. Guess it's a grumpy glitch depending on your PC

None of these are working for me. I'm trying to connect my iPod to a new computer. I logged out and back in, tried all my USB ports. Even tried going back to my old computer and installing the newest version of iTunes ans syncing. Still no luck on the new computer. Is it because I'm trying to go to a new computer?

Not sure what happend, but just after posting the above, I closed iTunes but kept my iPod cable connected. Opened iTunes and my iPod was detected....

Amazing this worked for me as well after 4 days of trying so many different things. I sure would like to know the cause though.Apple should reply for all of us who don't know what happened. Thanks so much!
