I had the exact same problem. I tried everything. Eventually what worked was blow drying it with a hair dryer and then putting in the end of a bobby pin. Hope I helped. :)

I ve got the same problem. After accidentally dropping my iphone5  in the snow, it got stucked in headphone mode. What i did, i on the heater and i was like waving it a bit with headphone jack facing the heater for few seconds. It works. Just be careful not too close or too long exposing your iphone to the heater.

I dropped mine today, and after it was stuck in headphone mode.

I couldn't get any of the above solutions to work. I was just about to do a restore but I decided to do one more try with a toothpick. And pulled out a peice of lint that had jammed into the end, and putting the headphones in and out probably made it worse, it needed the pointed edge to bring it out. Seems like dropping it may have moved to the debris to a spot that bothered the headphone sensor.

Logged in just to like your comment and let you know that your advice helped a lot. In fact that's the only what helped. I tried everything: hard reseting, turning on and off airplane mode, compressed air, drying fan, brushing inside, blowing, sucking and all that s**t. I took that little stick with cotton which is used for cleaning your ears, took some cotton off so it could fit right through earphone opening and turned it around inside couple times. It came out dirty a little bit on the end so that could be the problem. After that it works again. No more headphone mode when earphones are unplugged. Thanks bro.

After running into this problem a few times on my wife's iPhone 5 and mine, and trying nearly everything, I thought I'd summarize the possible approaches and add a couple of new solutions (last 2 steps). Here's the list of what to try in order from simplest to most radical:

    1. Try just rapidly inserting and removing your earbud plug 20 times in a row.
    2. Try a hard reboot (hold Lock button and Home button down at the same time)
    3. Power the phone off and back on (by holding down the Lock button until the "swipe to power down" menu appears)
    4. Try and remove any link or gunk stuck in the earphone jack by spraying a can of compressed air into it.
    5. Try and remove any lint or gunk stuck in the earphone jack by with a pin, the end of a paper clip, or a Q-tip with most of the cotton removed (make sure you twirl it in the right direction to avoid leaving any cotton behind). Also try dipping the Q-tip in rubbing alcohol before inserting it.
    6. Take a Q-tip with most of the cotton removed and apply a tiny amount of conductive grease on it (try Radio Shack or the hardware store for this) and swirl it around in the hole. I've had this work when all else fails. The idea is that the contact in the jack gets stuck "in" because of dirt or corrosion and the grease allows it to pop back out.
    7. As a last resort (warning this may leave a faint visible residue on the inside of your screen), buy some electrical contact cleaner (get the kind that is safe on all plastics), spray it in the hole and then insert and remove your earbud plug a bunch of times. Keep your phone vertical (hole side down) when you're doing. The reason is (per the warning) that the cleaner solvent may leak into the inside of the phone and leave a faint but permanent trace on the inside of the display. Keeping the phone vertical reduces but does not eliminate the this risk. DO THIS STEP AT YOUR OWN RISK!

This just happened to me after having phone in my pocket while shoveli snow.  I know I grabbed it a coule of times with a wet snowy glove.  Anyway, I tried a couple of the suggests below (blowing into headphone jack, blow dryer, putting headphone jack in and out, resetting).  The one that worked was actually the person who suggested calling weather or time in headphone mode and listening for two minutes or so.  I did that twice and when I took the headphone jack out the second time, I was back in ringer mode.  Who knows which really worked but this last one seemed to.

MY phone did this yesterday and I tried: turning it off; blowing and sticking the head jack port; putting headphones in and out etc etc. I contacted Apple support who walked me through backing up my phone and resetting it, this worked until I received a call and then it revert to headphone mode. I recontacted apple and they said I would need to spend 233.67 pounds to have it fixed.

However, after clicking about turning all the sounds off...text noise etc...I went into settings - sounds - ringer and alerts and clicked the 'change with buttons' to off. This has solved my issue! I can still use the side buttons to turn volume up and down and it has turned it back to volume instead of headphones.

GIve it a try and save some money. Clearly there is something wrong somewhere but it fixed the issue.
