Quality of edited photos

Hello, I recently edited a lot of photos imported from my DSLR, and notice that the size of the edited photo is smaller and when compared side by side the image quality is lower. As an example, a photo original of 2.5 MB was edited using the auto optimise feature (ie no cropping) and reduced to 877 K. Is there a way to avoid the drop in image quality? Thanks
