Apr 23, 2012 6:51 AM in response to Limnosby starmarg,Thanks for your quick reply Limnos. Have looked at the links you supplied.
Have tried disconnecting and re connecting firewire in case its that - no change
I have looked at the Console App in Utilities and the record says 'Failed to count the number of files in "Systems/Library/Startupitems" - No such file or directory'
Not sure what the above means.
Based on the various links I will have a go with Disk Utility - stupid question but if I want to check the external hard drive then I assume that I will need to have it switched on when I go into Disk Utility? As you can tell my IT skills are not well developed!
I wondered if the reference to Java in the log on Time Machine Buddy meant that the problem was related to Java - I had a look at the Java preferences but it suggested that the settings should be left as they were (unless you were very expert!)
Thanks for your help so far
