Final Cut Express 3.5 on 10.5.8 not capturing or importing video

I bought FCE with my Mac Pro in 2006, but never used it because iMovie HD 6 did everything I needed. Now, it looks like my HD 6 is having some serious problems and I can't find support or a replacement. So, I whipped out my FCE ver 3.5 and install it on my 2006 Mac Pro, now running 10.5.8... everything went fine, except I cant capture video from my Canon Vixia HV30, nor can I import .m4v or .mov files??? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

Thank you for your response. The only three setup choices that actually operate my camera are the three HDV-Apple Intermediate Codecs... which I have tried with varying results: one time it showed the video in the browser for a moment and then killed the program. Another time the sound was there, but the screen was black. None of the other options operate my camera at all. Any further suggestions? Thanks again.

HDV cameras can be a bit tricky as FCE can see them as two different cameras ie. DV or HDV.

FCE must be setup to receive one or the other.

If you shot HDV and are outputting HDV then use the 1440x 1080i Easy Setup.

There is a 50 and 60 choice corresponding to PAL or NTSC respectively.

Note: If you change an Easy Setup you need to create a New Project/Sequence.

Changing the Easy Setup only affects new not existing.
