My volume quit working?
The volume quit working on my computers speakers. I try to hit the up volume and a greyed out speaker appears showing volume bar all the way up with a circle below it with a line through it???

Open System Preferences ➜ Sound ➜ Output. What is selected as your output device? If it is optical digital, then look in the headphone socket and see if you can see a red light. The headphone socket does double duty as both a traditional analogue audio out and as optical digital audio out. There's a micro-switch in the socket that switches between the two modes. If you can see the red light then try inserting a headphone jack a few times to see if you can 'throw' the switch.
That didn't work but thanks.
The red light wasn't on but I put my headphones in and out a couple of times anyway and that worked. The Output switched to Internal Speakers and they started working. Thanks.
You're welcome! 🙂
This answered my problem too. Thanks!
Same problem, had the red light, tried inserting headphones several times and light went off briefly but comes back on???
Try jiggling a cocktail stirrer or tooth pick inside the audio output port. Some times a blast of compressed air will trip the switch. If no success, take it to the genius bar and have them trip the switch.
Ciao.
