Why does the default email reader in Mail Preferences keep changing to Outllook after I set it to Mail 5.2 and then close the preference pane? The Default in Outlook is set as Mail 5.2.

Remove Outlook.
I have this problem and i deleted Outlook however i still have the default email reader reverting to "Run a DLL as an app - - Windows xp Professional 2 app. (VMWare Fusion 3.1.3)
Open Mail, go to Mail>Preferences>General, set default to be Mail.
i have done that 14 times and it switches back... the swtiching is the problem

If you did not do it this way you have not got rid of it yet, especially if you just put it in the trash.
change the default email client back to Mail (in mail / preferences / general), close the dialog box, quit mail and rebuild your launch services database.
run the following terminal command
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
see if the default client sticks after that.
A reboot after the rebuild won't hurt either.
