Macbook Pro and Thunderbolt USB problem

I have read a few threads regarding problems with the Thunderbolt displays and Macbook Airs. None of the suggestions in there work for me including doing an SMC Reset.


Here is my problem. I have a brand new Macbook Pro 17", 2.5Ghz Core i7, 8gb ram, 750Gb HD etc., new Thunderbolt display. Running OS X Lion 10.7.3.


In the back of my display I have plugged in a USB mouse from Logitech, an Apple full size keyboard and my wired ethernet connection. The monitor and peripherals stay at work and I take the Macbook Pro home every night. If I do not follow a certain sequence every morning, my computer freezes. I put the power connector in first, open the lid, wait for the screen on the laptop to show the login prompt, login and then and only then can I plug in my Thunderbolt connector. Once I do this, my second screen lights up and my mouse, keyboard and ethernet connection works. But if I plug in the Thunderbolt first before power up or if I plug it in before logging in, then I have a high probabilty that the USB hub on the back of the monitor will stop working altogether. Then I have to move my mouse and keyboard over to the laptop and everything works great (my ethernet keeps working fine though). My mouse scroll for whatever reason goes into high gear and starts scrolling much faster and I have to slow it down.


Now, this works 90% of the time. But there are days, like today, where this process does not work. And when it doesn't, either I have to move the USB devices over or like today, the machine freezes and no longer responds to any input. It appears to still be working as the screen updates but I can never regain control of it via any keyboard or mouse.


My co-worker has the exact same setup and exact same problem. We also have 10 Thunderbolt displays here (all new) and same problem with ANY I choose. So this is not a hardware issue. Something is wrong with the driver code for some device. And my co-worker has an Apple mouse so that's not the issue either. If this can help Apple with debugging, here is another interesting tid bit. 3 weeks ago, I had a non Thunderbolt display. And for 6 months with an older laptop, I had issues with it's USB hub. Same kind of problem. Some days, the USB hub in the monitor would work and others it would go dead until a reboot was performed.


I think a driver needs some fixing somewhere.

I have been facing a similar problem that was solved by deactivating Airport and disconnecting and reconnecting the thunderbolt cable on the MacBook Pro.

Watch out for some of these displays are just plain FAULTY. Remember, it's supposed to work well for that price.

I paid R12 800.00 (US$1528.00), (YES not $999.00 as in the States), in March and the screen worked on and off. Would never wake from a sleep, always have to restart, see previous posts. Eventually I gave it back after it was in with Apple South Africa for repairs a few times. Last week, I bought another new one from a different Apple Store in SA. and it's perfect on the same MBP! Yesterday Apple SA was still telling me that they will fix it and I put my foot down and phoned the CEO, and got my refund today. So watch out for Serial No.: C02H 281VDJGR it's Faulty! Give it back.

ejkitchen I have exactly the same setup and exactly the same problem. Your solution seem to work. All though the procedure had to be repeated for it is not a permanent cure.


MacBook Pro 17" 8GB RAM, SSD blah blah. Thunderbolt, Full size mac keyboard and Logitec Performatnce MX mouse plugged in to the back of the Thunderbolt.


It was not happening for a month since I got the brand new Thunderbolt, but then it started sort of out of the blue: The keyboad and mouse do not work if I connect the display to the macbook and then start the macbook up.


I did what you've recommended: I shut everything down. Then I unplugged the Thunderbolt and let it sit for about 15 seconds or so. Then plugged the Thunderbolt back in and attached the monitor and power leads to the macbook. then turn the macbook on. All is well. No problems so far. But I think it will get hozed again after about a month or so perhaps and the procedure will have to be repeated.


Thank you for posting this though. It was driving me nuts, I though something is messed up with my lappie, turns out the Thunderbolt just needs an ocasional brainwash so to speak.

Very happy I found this post.


I have a MBA 13" and two TB displays (two offices). One of the TBs has: ethernet, a Blue Snowball USB microphone and an old Logitech Cordless Mouseman optical mouse. The other TB has: ethernet, an external USB HDD, and a Logitech Performance MX mouse with USB dongle.


If I don't have the Performance MX dongle plugged in, hotswapping the TB in and out works just fine, time and again. If the Performance MX dongle is plugged in, I can use the display and the ethernet and the camera, but not the USB ports. The only way I can use the Performance MX is to reboot my MBA and then plug in the TB.


This is reproducible on both TBs, exactly the same way. The old Logitech doesn't create these problems.


I think we can confirm it's likely the Performance MX driver?

Some more info:


Removing the Logitech dongle while the TB display is plugged in causes:


1. the display to go dark; no amount of hotswapping will bring it back, including powering it down by unplugging it; if I move the MBA to another TB that is fine and plug that TB in, it will also go black --> the problem is on the MBA, not the TB


2. an attempt to open the Display Settings will freeze the process (spinning colour wheel)


3. an attempt to "detect displays" will crash the MBA


I have the latest Logitech Control Centre installed, according to the Logitech website (version 3.5.1.23).

So I have been having a bad week. This week, powering off the monitor does nothing for some reason. My computer hangs and hangs. So now I have removed the Logitech Dongle from the back of the monitor and put it right into the laptop which is what I do not want to do because I do not take my mouse home. I have another mouse there.


We all need to call Apple and complain. This is a driver or firmware bug. And I get the strange feeling that because we are not using Apple accessories, we will not get any attention to this problem.

i have noticed that if i plug the power into my macbook pro, wait like 10 seconds, and then plug the thunderbolt cable in, it makes it much more likely that the usb devices will work. not 100% though.


the worst part is that if i log out after this happens i get a kernel panic. and then spotlight re-indexes (which takes forever) when it reboots. and if you also have an online backup program installed (eg mozy), you get two hard drive indexing processes going. which is rather slow.


although when i first got it (before the 10.7.3 or 10.7.4 update) it was much much worse--plugging in the display would cause a kernel panic about 1 out of 10 times.

Eventually Apple replaced my Thunderbolt display by a brand new one and since one month (I waited cautiously before reporting to this forum) everything is working fine: display, sound, USB ports and Ethernet connection.


I am very happy again with my Thunderbolt display of which every functionnality contributes to make it a device worth its price.


I don't know if it was a hardware or firmware problem but it was only fixed by an exchange for a new one.

Out of curiosity, do you have a Logitech Performance MX Mouse in your setup? Based on my limited testing and other posts here, it's hard for me to believe that the issue with that mouse could be solved by replacing the display. And @AdisCOrovic has the same issue but no Logitech mouse. Perhaps there are two different things going on here?

You all seem to have the same mouse and the same issue that I am experiencing with my TB. Would you mind sharing the serial numbers of your TBs?

Does anyone else still having this issue have a Logitech Performance MX Mouse?

Does anyone out there use a Logitech Unifying Receiver (little USB dongle thingy) without a Performance MX Mouse?

Hi Gorbet, my serial # is C02GP4QGDJGR


Another one of my employees has a generic hard drive USB enclosure and uses a bluetooth mouse/keyboard from Apple and he has the same problem. His serial # is C02GJ31TDJGR.


Another one of my devs who does not have the issue and only has an Apple USB keyboard plugged in, has the serial # C02GP2XXDJGR. I tried to put my Logitech mouse connector into his monitor quickly, put the laptop to sleep (Macbook Pro, same as mine, brand new), woke it up and could not reproduce the problem. However I only tried for 5 mins. I would not count that as a thorough test by any means. But I doubt mine would last more than two tries.


For the record, my problem has gotten worse. Now unplugging is not reliable. I crash my machine often. We have ten Thunderbolt displays here so I just took another one and will try it for a few days. If it works, I will report the serial # as well.

I use a Magic Mouse.


It is more likely that your mouse is Ok as long as you plug it directly to your Mac and not to the display: in that case, it is the display's USB port that doesn't work.


It is indeed surprising that Apple had to change the display to solve my problem (I only had the image left). Apple first changed the mother board, the power board and then both mother board and power board before resolving to change the display.

The issue with me (and several others, I think) is this configuration:


- Logitech USB Unifying Receiver plugged into the TB Display (and, yet to confirm, using a Logitech Performance MX mouse)


In that situation, none of the USB devices in the display ports are recognized, though the camera, speakers, display, and ethernet still work.


Like others, if I plug my Unifying Receiver into my MBA directly, then the mouse works AND the display USB ports all work.


I have two TBDs (serial #s C02GW038DJGR & C02GW070DJGR) and the above observations are true for both.


Because of these observations, I strongly suspect that the issues those of us with this setup are having, are not hardware deficiencies but rather problems with the low-level software. Either the firmware for the TBD USB ports, or the Logitech Unifying Receiver driver.


I'd be really interesed in hearing from anyone using a Unifying Receiver with a piece of Logitech hardware other than the Performance MX mouse. Or anyone else using a Performance MX mouse with their MB/MBA, with or without problems.
