Q: I'm tired of the aperture problems!

Hi, I'm new with MAC, so, also with aperture.

Since I installed, I spend more time in the forums trying to repair the stu pid library than editing pics.

The problem: The file is currently offline.

Situation: More than 20.000 photos in an external HDD, imported to aperture (more than 3 times) with the library in the Imac HD.

I try the following solutions, offcourse, without sucess:

- Reconnect the hard disk holding the referenced image’s master, or otherwise locate or make the file available to Aperture for reconnecting.

- Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library (the tree "solutions" hundreds of times).

- Copy the library to the external HDD.

- Import the entire librery AGAIN! (couples of times).

- and others not so convencional sugestions...

So, If anyone can help me! pleaseeeee!!!!!

ps: No, I dont want to reconect FILE by FILE each time I need to wirk with it.

Thanks!

I am a little confused by your description.

How is the external HD formatted?

Are you running a referenced library?

Have you tried working with a small library locally on your Mac to make sure that things work without using the external HD?

    Something is very strange here.

Did you format this HD when you bought it?  If it's formatted as FAT32 I would expect these problems, as FAT32 is a very old PC-centric file system that Microsoft recommends not be used anymore.

It will cause all sorts of problems with Aperture as it cannot support the file names that Aperture uses, and doesn't support the permissions.

I've used Aperture for 5 years and have never seen these problems, so I suspect an issue with the format of the drive or something else in your setup that is causing this; it's not a general Aperture problem.

Are your referenced masters on a network volume, or is your external drive directly connected?  If your network is acting up Aperture may lose the connection to the masters.

Do you really have to reconnect "FILE by FILE"? Usually it should suffice to collect all images with masters offline or missing in a smart album, and then to reconnect the first image in this selection, using the "reconnect all" button. The others should be reconnect as well.

To create the smart album use the added rules "File status is missing" or "File status is off-line" - I know, this is no comfort in your present situation, but perhaps may come in handy, if this bug will will hit you again.

The External HDD it's a 2 tb (Lacie) conected directed to the Imac. It's formated in fat32, and I used the Paragon Software.

I don't think it's a format or disc problem, because I had also another aperture library (small, like only 300 pics) in the same disk and I can use it in aperture without any problem.

I also deactivated the place's and faces thing.

    Anything else??? please!!!

ps. I'm really sorry about my english, I know It *****.

Reference library? (I don't know...). I have the Aperture library (the problematic one) in the Imac, in pictures. I think that I imported the Masters (rws and jpeg), because it's really heavy, like 20 gb.

    > YES. I click the Reconect all button and only reconect the first file of the album.

When I imported the photos I chose the Import folders as proyects. Could be this a problem?

    Jorge,

an Aperture Library needs to be on a MacOS Extended formatted volume, please read this:

If your other library works, you have been very, very lucky.

Reformat your drive, after backing up the library.

20GB is not that big for 20,000 photos, that is only about 1MB per photo, about right for the referenced library. Your problem is almost certainly due to the fact that your referenced masters are on a FAT32 drive.

    Morning!

I want to say thanks to all of you for helping me.

Finally I format the external hdd to mac format and it's working great.

Was a lot of work, because of the backups but it's worth it.

    So, thanks again!
