I just transferred my .mpg files from my old microsoft computer to my imac and am unable to open the files. I keep getting the following message: The document could not be opened. The required codec isn't available.
Try downloading the freeVLC Application and opening it with that. It is the Swiss Army Knife of codecs.

Agreed. I recently 'discovered' VLC and it is really good, especially as it is free! Solved several problems with older .mpg files for me.
